001   Front                                                                                $220

This 7 3/4” tall black front has a red cut out across the top with white leather letters that read TORRENT and a black cut out across the bottom with white leather letters that read ROCHESTER, NH.  There is a 2 3/4” tall white number 2 in the middle.

 

002   Ribbon Lot                                                                        $80

This lot includes a black & beige colored 9” long by 3” wide Baltimore ribbon that reads VETERAN VOLUNTEER FIREMAN'S ASSOCIATION at the top and BALTIMORE 1763 at the bottom and a 3 1/2” tall V.F.A. scrambler in the middle.  The other ribbon in the lot is a black Philadelphia ribbon with gold-colored lettering that reads VOLUNTEER FIREMEN ASSOCIATION at the top and PHILADELPHIA 1875 at the bottom with a depiction of a wooden hydrant in the middle.  This lot includes the small display case.

 

003   Front                                                                              $75

This 8” tall black leather front has 2 white cut-outs.  The top cut-out has red leather letters that read ENG  E.  The I and N are missing.  The bottom cut-out has metal letters that read A M C.  There is a 3” tall red number 1 in the middle.  It is thicker and heavier than most fronts.  It is old and looks like it has never been on a helmet.

 

004   Helmet                                                                              $135

This black leather Cairns New Yorker has a black front with 2 red cut-outs.  The top one has white painted letters that read ENGINE and the bottom also had white painted letters and reads LYNNFIELD.  It has white reflective tape between the combs.  There is a hand painted number 37 on the back brim.  The lining, ear flaps and hanging ring are all intact.

 

005   Badge                                                                              $410

This  hand engraved badge depicts a steam engine in the middle.  MERRIMACK #1 is arched across the top and BRADFORD is arched across the bottom.  Bradford in now part of Haverhill MA.  The pin is intact.  Very nice badge.

 

006   Badge                                                                             $75

This Maltese cross-shaped badge is hand engraved.  It reads EUREKA 1 HUDSON.  The Eureka #1 is a button hand engine built in 1872 that originally fought fired in Hudson MA.  In 1907 it was sold to Portsmouth NH and it is still there.  This badge is 2 1/4” tall by 2 1/4” wide.  It is hallmarked JOHN ROBBINS BOSTON.

 

007   Pressure Dome                                                               $500

Made of copper with a brass flange at the bottom, this pressure dome is shaped like a light bulb.  It has a 55 1/4” circumference and a 17 1/2” diameter.  It is 31” tall. The circular flange is 7 1/2” in diameter and has 8 bolt holes.  It could be a steam engine dome or possibly a hand engine dome though actual origin is unknown.

 

008   Helmet                                                                             $325

This black leather high eagle Cairns helmet has a New York tag.  It has a black front with a red cut-out and white leather letters that read Q M C (Quarter Master Corps).  Everything about this helmet looks right.  The hanging ring and liner are intact.

 

009   Toy                                                                                   $650

This pressed steel toy water tower truck is manufactured by Sturditoys of Pawtucket, RI.  It is 32” long and built to look like a 1920s American LaFrance water tower.  It has WATER TOWER NO. 9 decals on each side of the seat and each side of the truck body.  It also has a dash board decal and a manufacturers decal.  Both the back and front wheels steer and about 95% of the red paint is intact.
 

010   Alarm Box                                                                         $1050

This rare Gamewell combination fire and police alarm box is 23 1/2” tall by 11 1/2” wide.  The door on the upper section reads FOR FIRE, BREAK GLASS, TURN HANDLE, MORGAN AND WRIGHT.  Originally in Chicago, Morgan and Wright built bicycle tires.  When they moved their plant to Detroit in 1906 they started making tires for the booming automobile industry.  The back side of the upper door has brass tag #438 which matches the code wheel in the fire sending mechanism.  The lower police section door reads EMERGENCY ALARM SYSTEM, THE GAMEWELL CO., NEW YORK.  The back side of the lower door has brass tag #73 which matches the code wheel in the police sending mechanism.  The lower door has 2 key holes, one to activate the police sending mechanism and the other to access the telephone (which is missing).  This box has been restored.  All the brass is polished and the raised lettering on the doors has been painted white.

 

011   Lantern                                                                            $550

This hard to find brass Dietz Fire Queen Lantern has a clear globe.  Unlike a Fire King, a Fire Queen has a rectangle tubular frame, the reservoir is shaped differently, the handle connects differently and both the cage hinge and the cage locking clips are different.

 

012   Staff                                                                                 $1500

This very rare Fire Wardens Staff is 6 foot 1 1/2” long overall.  The 5 foot long bottom section appears to be oak and is stained light brown.  It has a bulb-shaped turning where the 13 1/2” long nickel plated finial is attached.  The finial has a curved W to represent warden and a gold colored flame at the very top to represent fire.

 

013   Parade Belt                                                                     $150

This white belt has red trim and a red cut-out with white leather letters that read FIRE WARDEN.  It is 56” long, suggesting the warden was robust. It does not have a keeper and is mounted on a pine board.  The consignor believes that this belt and the Lot #12 Staff were used by the same warden.

 

014   Builders Plate                                                                    $775

Brass engraved manufacturers plate mounted on wood.  Plate measures 5” wide by 3 3/4” tall.  Plate reads ELIAS THAYER MAKER, BOSTON, MASS 1838.

 

015   Print                                                                                 Passed

This nicely framed and matted 1858 Currier & Ives medium folio print titled FACING THE ENEMY is from the American Fireman Series.  It depicts a fireman holding a nozzle while standing on a pile of burning rubble.  The depiction measures 3 14/” wide by 17” tall.  There is a very small tear on the right-hand edge.

 

016   Pedestal                                                                           $800

This 11 foot 3” tall pedestal appears to be a Type C No. 708 Gamewell pedestal.  The alarm box receptacle has a fluted extension.  It has a globe holder that fits on top of the extension.  The 14” diameter globe is plastic, not glass, a change made in most cities because of vandalism.  The base is 13” diameter, has 4 bolt-holes and the column of the base is fluted to match the extension. The pedestal has been recently painted and is in good condition.

 

017   Helmet                                                                              $375

This black high eagle helmet has a brass tag that reads JOHN OLSON CO 183 GRAND ST NEW  YORK CITY.  It has been married with a dark red Cairns front with 2 black cut-outs.  The top cut-out has white painted letters that read SO PARK and the bottom cut-out has white painted letters that read F D.  There are 2 1/2” tall white leather sewn on numbers that read 32 in the middle.  The liner and ear flaps are in good condition.

 

018   Register                                                                            $1250

Signed FREDERICK PEARCE N.Y., this ink writer register from the 1890s is very rare.  It sits on a black metal base that is 12” wide, 9” deep and 2” tall.  It has 1/2” register paper, electrical coils under the base, 2 external wire terminals and what appears to be a variable speed unit mounted next to the register.  It is covered by a glass case with a brass frame.

 

019   Helmet                                                                              $140

This yellow leather Cairns New Yorker has a black front with two red cut-outs.  The top one has white painted letters that read GEN ELECT CO and the bottom one has white painted letters that read R W F D.  There is a sewn-on number 1 in the middle.  It has Bourke flip-down eye protection.  The lining, ear flaps and hanging ring are intact.

 

020   Parade Belt                                                                       $120

This black belt has white trim.  It has a red cut-out with white leather letters that reads 2 KEARSAGE 2.  The belt buckle is intact but the inner belt in missing.  It does not have a keeper.

 

021   Helmet                                                                              $240

This red aluminum high eagle Senator has a red front with a black cu-out and white leather letters that read W F D.  It appears to be a Worcester MA helmet.  The round inside tag depicts a Maltese cross that reads CAIRNS NEW YORK.  The eagle is also signed Cairns.  Most of the red paint on the back brim has flaked off.  The hanging ring and liner are intact.

 

022   Print                                                                                 Pass

This framed and matted 1858 Currier & Ives medium folio print titled RUSHING TO THE CONFLICT is from the American Fireman Series.  It depicts a fireman with red fire reflecting off his coat.  He is pointing at the fire with one hand and holding a working trumpet in the other.  The depiction measures 13 1/4” wide by 17” tall.  The print is in very good condition.

 

023   Alarm Box                                                                         $825

This rare and hard to find Sterling Alarm Box is unusual because the sending mechanism operates on 110 volts.  The door reads STERLING FIRE ALARM SYSTEM, BREAK GLASS, TURN KEY, OPEN DOOR, PULL HOOK DOWN, STERLING SIREN FIRE ALARM CO. INC, ROCHESTER, N.Y.  It does not have and never had a door tag.  It is 13” tall and 10” wide (about the size of a Gamewell sector 3 box).  The door of the inner sending mechanism has a chain with a pin on the end that can be put in 1 of 4 holes.  The pin acts as a stop for the lever and controls the number of rotations the code wheel makes.

 

024   Sending Mechanism                                                           $35

The door on this 110 volt Sterling Fire Alarm Co. sending mechanism reads PULL HOOK WAY DOWN AND LET GO.  It has a chain with a pin on the end that can be put in 1 of 4 holes.  The pin acts as a stop for the hook and controls the number of rotations the code wheel makes.  This mechanism would go in Lot #23 Sterling Alarm Box.

 

025   Firemark                                                                           $400

This United Firemens Ins Co of Philadelphia PA plaque is 9 1/2” tall by 12” wide.  It has 3 mounting holes and it is cast in high relief.  It depicts a steam engine with wheels that have 8 spokes.  It is mounted on a oval shaped wooden board.  The back notes the following museum information BU314VA 1869 OLDEST V.F. MARK.

 

026   Lantern                                                                             Pass

Signed on the bottom P J PORTER PHILA PA and W. WESTLAKE PAT SEP 12 '65 DEC 12 '65 APR 7 '68, this fixed globe lantern has a clear globe and a large 7” bail handle.  The bottom can be removed so that the wick can be lit and regulated without removing the globe.  The top flips over making it easy to take out the globe for cleaning.  This is a chiefs or presentation lantern and the style was used by both railroad (presentation) and firefighting (chiefs).

 

027   Print                                                                                 Pass

This very colorful framed and matted 1895 print is copyrighted by Buchanan & Lyall from the Fireman Past and Present Series and is titled UP TO DATE.  It depicts a horse-drawn steam engine and a horse-drawn water tower racing to a fire.  The depiction measures 22 3/4” wide by 17” tall.
 

028   Siren                                                                                 $550

This Type H Sterling hand crank siren is in working order, has serial no. 10468, and comes complete with a mounting bracket.  The name tag is shaped like a badge and reads STERLING SIREN FIRE HORN, THE INTERSTATE MACHINE PRODUCTS CO., ROCHESTER, N.Y.  Later this Rochester Co. changed it's name to THE STERLING SIREN FIRE ALARM CO. INC.

 

029   Gong                                                                                $520

6” Gamewell Excelsior electro-mechanical gong in a dark oak case.  The case is 15 3/4” tall and 9 1/4” wide.  The brass tag above the glass reads THE GAMEWELL FIRE ALARM TELEGRAPH CO. NEW YORK.  The 6” brass bell protrudes thru the front of the door.  2 triangles of wood (1” b 1” in size) have been removed from the door on the lower right & left corners.

 

030   Trumpet                                                                           $650

Several different design motifs decorate this unusual 22” tall trumpet.  The front of the engraved body depicts flowers that surround a steam engine.  The back of the engraved body depicts a nozzle crossed by 2 trumpets.  The 7 3/4” bell has raised figures of 2 almost naked women and 2 almost naked men accompanied by a cupid, birds, urns and dragonflies.  The bands to which the tassel holders are attached and the band around the mouthpiece are decorated with raised birds and urns.  The cord is in fair condition.  The tassel end of the cord is badly frayed.  Both are very faded and appear to have been red, white and blue.  It has a couple of very minor dents.

 

031   Boys Torch                                                                        Pass

This rare 22 1/2” tall torch has four red glass panels that each measure 7 1/2” tall by 4 3/4” wide.  It was used to lead night time processions and also to lead apparatus to fires at night.  Because it was often carried by a boy this type of torch is often referred to as a boys torch.  One of the glass panels is cracked but intact.  It has a pin that slides up and down allowing the panel to serve as a door.  It has a 4” wide by 5 1/2” long by 3” tall reservoir with a finger loop to put it in and out of the torch.  It is made of red painted galvanized tin and has a hanging loop at the top.  The bottom is made to accept a long round wooden carrying pole.

 

032   Helmet                                                                              $340

This white leather Cairns ventilated high eagle helmet has the date 1876 painted on the back brim.  The numbers are gold colored with an orange trim.  It has a black front with 3 red cut outs.  The top cut out has white leather letters that read BROOKFIELD.  The letter I is missing and the letter L is partially missing.  The bottom cut out has white leather letters that reads F.D..  The middle cut out is a decoration.  The helmet and the front appear to have been recently married.  The name MOOTE is hand printed in the liner

 

033   Parade Torch                                                                    $150

This very rare Dietz 21” long wooden parade torch (probably from the late 1800s) is painted black.  Both the thin handle and the 3 1/2” diameter reservoir have fancy turnings similar to early American furniture.  The wooden reservoir is hollowed out to receive the actual reservoir which is made of metal.  The wick holder, which threads in and out, has CONVEX written on one side and DIETZ on the other.

 

034   Model                                                                               $300

Hand made model of early coffee-grinder style hand tub.  Measures 15” long by 6 1/2” wide by 5 1/4” tall.

 

035   Photo Lot                                                                          $200

Lot includes 12 assorted early firefighting photos mostly of apparatus.  25” by 14” photo of the Cincinnati horse-drawn apparatus, 19” by 15” photo of Boston Steamer Eng 11, 11” by 15” photo of Boston combination 6 responding, 3 other photos identified as Boston.  The rest are un-identified.
 

036   Grenade                                                                           $175

Embossed HAYWARD HAND GRENADE FIRE EXTINGUISHER NEW YORK around the shoulder, this cobalt blue grenade has 18 vertical pleats and a diamond shaped panel.  It is 5 3/4” tall and the stopper is intact.  No Contents.

 

037   Uniform                                                                            $175

This lot includes a black parade belt with yellow trim and a yellow cut-out with black leather letters that read KULPMONT, a yellow shirt with black lapels, black cuffs and black collar.  The letter W is sewn onto one lapel and the letter E on the other.  Also included is a pair of black pants with yellow stripe on each leg.

 

038   Brakes                                                                              $380

This 16 foot 7 3/4” long set of wooden hand tub brakes has brass tips on each end.  They are one 64th of an” over 2 1/2” in diameter beyond the rectangular strap holes.  The rectangular strap holes are 86 1/2” from the round centering hole on each end of each brake.  These brakes are most likely Hunneman but there is a small chance they could be Howard & Davis or Thayer brakes.  There are in very good condition considering they are over 100 years old.

 

039   Helmet                                                                              $350

This Cairns high eagle white leather 64 comb ventilated helmet does not have a front.  The liner is starting to separate from the helmet and the hanging ring is intact. The inside metal tag is signed 142 GRAND STREET NEW YORK.  There is a paper label with the firefighters name though is mostly illegible.

 

040   Tags & Code Wheels                                                          $130

17 sets of alarm box door tags with matching code wheels.  The wheels all appear to be Gamewell.  About 1/2 of the  tags are brass and the rest aluminum.  No plastic.  The numbers are 12, 14, 15, 28, 31, 33, 38, 49, 152, 213, 215, 217, 218, 223, 228, 232, 1314 and 2227.

 

041   Flag                                                                                  $150

This double sided red flag reads TRUCK 3 F.D.M.V. (Mount Vernon) 1949 HONOR COMPANY DRILLS.  Overall it is 63” long by 37” tall.  It has a 3 1/2” wide border that encircles the entire flag.  One side is in good condition and the other side is in fair condition.

 

042   Badge                                                                               $200

This hand engraved badge reads GEN PUTNAM 4 WEYMOUTH F.D.  The Gen Putnam is a Button hand engine that started in Danvers, Mass and went to Weymouth, Mass in 1878 and stayed there until 1891 when it was sold to the Worcester, Mass V.F.A. The number 21 is engraved at the bottom, and is probably the firefighters number.  The pin is intact.  It is a very nice piece.

 

043   Trumpet                                                                           $800

This Farmingdale, N.Y. trumpet is 22” tall.  The presentation reads PRESENTED TO EX-CHIEF DANIEL CHICHESTER BY THE FARMINGDALE FIRE DEPT 1916.  It has a floral design theme.  The base is 9 1/2” in diameter and has a scallop shape with about 20 waves.  Approximately 80% of what appears to be a silver wash remains.

 

044   Axe                                                                                  $250

This Viking style Parade axe is 37” long.  It has a spear shaped finial.  The wooden handle has a nice patina.  The metal has silver paint that appears to be original of which almost half of it has worn off.

 

045   Transmitter                                                                       $210

Metal case Gamewell transmitter with unsigned Peerless mechanism.  There are 36 code wheels with hangers for another 14 in this black metal case transmitter.  It is 18” wide by 20” tall by 6” deep.  All but 2 of the code wheels are 2 digits.  They start at number 12 and end at number 56.  There are 2 three digit numbers (222 and 333).  It appears to be in working order.
 

046   Parade Belt                                                                       $115

This black belt has white trim.  It has a red cut-out with white leather letters that reads LEHIGH.  The belt buckle and inner belt are intact but the inner keeper belt is disconnected. There is a small metal tag that reads CAIRNS & BROS, 143 GRAND ST, NY.  It comes with a metal keeper, tho probably not original to the belt.

Lot includes May 1912, May 1914 and August 1926 FIREMANS HERALD, June 1935 FIRE FIGHTING, May, Oct and Dec of 1938 FIRE ENGINEERING, Oct and Nov 1939 FIRE ENGINEERING, July and Oct 1928 NATIONAL FIRE PROTECTION ASSOC QUARTERLY, March 1957 FIREMEN and eleven 1974 issues of FIRE COMMAND.  March is the missing issue.

Both the belt and keeper are black with white trim and they each have a very dark red cut-out.  Both cut-outs have white leather letters.  The belt reads 4 TICONIC 4 and the keeper reads ELLSWORTH FALLS.  Both inner belts are intact.  It is being sold with a badge that reads FIRST ASSISTANT, ELLSWORTH F D.

052   Lamp                                                                                $120

This 11 1/4” tall motion lamp depicts a steam engine being pulled to a fire by 3 brown horses and a second steam engine already at the fire with 3 streams being played on the fire and a fourth about to start.  The lamp has a metal base and it is in working order.  The vertical seam is split but it does not affect the depiction.

 

053   Print                                                                                 $175

This Currier & Ives Darktown Fire Brigade Series colored print is titled TO THE RESCUE.  It depicts a hand engine named NIAGARA being pulled up hill toward a distant fire.  It is framed but not matted.  The wooden backer should be removed and replaced with an acid-free backer.

 

054   Alarm Box                                                                         $100

This cast iron Gamewell alarm box has a Cole keyguard.  The inner box has a 1916 Peerless plain sector mechanism which means it will interfere if pulled simultaneously with another box.  It is clean and has been recently painted.  The instructional door has tag #54 but does not match the code wheel.  It comes with a tall display stand.

 

055   Paper Lot                                                                          $290

As assortment of paper items relating to the Boston Fire Dept, most before 1900.  Includes early letter from the Torrent Eng Co 2 of Roxbury, historical summary of fires in Boston thru 1871, memorial of the Boston VFA 1878, pocket guide of Boston Fire-Alarm Telegraph 1800s, Boston in ashes sheet music and more.
 

056   Alarm Box                                                                         $115

This Gamewell Herculite alarm box has a Peerless sending mechanism.  It is a 1939 design 3-fold master box with 2 tags #516 and #7214.  The code wheel is #516.  It has a quick-action bulls eye door and diagonal white strips on the sides.  The current owner believes it is a Boston box.  It comes with a skeleton key that has been altered to open the box.

 

057   Alarm Box                                                                         $240

This Gamewell Excelsior 1901 non-interfering alarm box has a slanted fist.  The non-instructional door has a brass tag #48 that matches the code and the tapper bell.  There ar+C13e holes for a key guard but no key guard.

 

058   Lantern                                                                             $110

This Dietz Fire King lantern has a lift-off cage which is harder to find than the flip-up cages.  It is painted red and the frame appears to be rust free.  One of the stops, that the bottom of the lift-off cage sits on, is missing.  It has a clear globe.

 

059   Helmet                                                                              $270

This black leather Cairns helmet has a black F.D.N.Y. Front that has a red insert.  The insert has white cut-out letters that read 102.  The firefighters number 4828 (white paint) is below the red insert.  Located in the Bedford-Stuyvesant section of Brooklyn at 850 Bedford Ave, Ladder Co. #102 is part of Battalion #34.  This helmet was issued in 1960, is in good condition and is complete with liner and ear flaps.

 

060   Name Plate                                                                       $430

Probably from 1 of 2 Marlborough, Mass hand engines, this 12 1/2” long curved name plate reads OKOMMAKAMESIT.  It appears to be nickel plated brass. It was on the front of a leather parade belt.

 

061   Lantern                                                                             $150

Signed Wm PORTERS SONS, N.Y. PAT'D APR 23, 67, AUG 6, 69 JUNE 1, 71, this fixed globe lantern has a clear globe with a crackle finish.  The base has a door that slides sideways to access the wick.  1 of the 2 reservoir clips is missing, the wick holder is missing and there is a 1” by 1 1/2” hole in the reservoir.  The 5 1/4” diameter carrying ring appears to have been replaced.

 

062   Paper Lot                                                                          $220

36 Postcards most depicting hand engines.  7 are from the penny postcard era.  Group includes over 80 photos.  4 B/W 5x8” of 50s Berwick ME muster parade, approx 40 B/W 3x5” of the Cocasset of Foxboro MA, the Eagle of Fitzwilliam NH, the Washington of Provincetown MA, the Union #2 of Leicester MA, the Brooklyn Blades of Pasadena CA, the Rescue of Tilton NH and other rarely seen hand engines.  The rest of the lot are colored photos of various firefighting subjects.  All are in a 3-ring notebook.

 

063   Badge                                                                               $210

This hand-engraved badge reads BUTCHER-BOY arched around the top and BRIGHTON arched around the bottom.  The letters R.H. are on the very bottom.  Butcher-Boy, Brighton and R.H. are all colored black.  In the middle it reads L1H which is colored red.  Brighton, MA had 2 Hunneman hand engines named Butcher-Boy, serial numbers #143 and #462.

 

064   Lantern                                                                             $180

This plated Dietz Fire King lantern has a clear globe.  It bears the patent date Aug. 27, 07 and is in very good condition.

 

065   Toy                                                                                   $270

This 11” long cast iron 2-sheel hose reel is being pulled by a single silver-painted horse with a red-painted harness.  The wheels are painted red and it has a rear running board.  About 40 percent of the original paint is missing.

This 14 1/4” long case iron patrol wagon is being pulled b a team of three horses.  Two are painted black and one is painted white.  The two support wheels under the horses do roll.  The wagon is painted red along with it's removable driver.  It separates into two parts.

 

067   Toy                                                                                  $185

This 13 1/4” long cast iron steam engine is being pulled by a team of three horses.  Two are painted black and one silver.  It separates into two parts.  The driver is part of the steam engine casting and does not come off.  Over 90 percent of the original paint remains wit the exception of the yellow wheels.  They have almost 50 percent of the paint missing.

This Ahrens-Fox Builders Plate is 16 3/4” long X 2 1/4” tall.  It reads AHRENS-FOX, MODEL 75-6-1, REG NO 2013, CINCINNATI, OHIO U.S.A.  It is off a 1925 Ahrens-Fox Ladder Truck that saw service as Ladder 4 at the Chestnut Street Station in Lynn, Mass.  While cutting up this 75 foot ladder truck a man was killed.  It has 4 screw holes, 1 is cracked, and 1 very small piece missing.

This Plated 13” diameter wall-mounted pull gong is from the Newbury, Mass Fire Dept.  The patent dates of July 14, 91 and April 26, 92 are inside the gong.  The business end of the pull handle has gear teeth which turn the gear on the center shaft causing the double-ended hammer to spin and ring the gong.  Needs pull rope otherwise complete and in working order.

This framed and matted photo depicts the Androscoggin #3 Steam Engine of Lewiston, Maine hooked to a team of horses.  The Androscoggin #3 Serial #304 was built in 1868 by the Amoskeag Man. Co. of Manchester, N.H.  Taken in front of the firehouse, this photo also depicts a 4 wheel hose reel hooked to a single horse.  22 people are in the photo, 16 of which appear to be firefighters.  The 27 1/2” X 23 1/4” wooden frame is new but nice.  The photo is in very good condition.

This clear railroad grenade with blue liquid is embossed C. & N-W, Ry. Which stands for Chicago and Northwestern Railway.  It is 17 3/4” long and is mounted on a nicely routed 24” long hardwood board.  It is most likely manufactured by Harden and was usually found in Pullman cars.

This brown gutta-percha photo case depicts a firefighter with a trumpet leaning against a hydrant.  Samuel Perch patented this type of photo case in 1854.  Of the two gutta-percha cases with fire related designs, this one is the most difficult to find.  The front is in very good condition and the back has a crack about 1 1/2” long. It contains a tintype photo of a firefighter wearing a bib front shirt, parade belt, white gloves and red leggings.

This very early 24 piece puzzle depicts 5 different horse drawn apparatus.  The perimeter has 16 interlocking pieces and the interior has 8 that do not interlock.  When assembled the puzzle is 15 1/4” tall by 20” wide.  The pieces average 3” by 4” each.  Although it is not a strip puzzle, it is set up like one.  The top row depicts 3 horses pulling a ladder truck. The middle row depicts 2 white horses pulling a four-wheel chemical wagon and 2 chestnut horses pulling a four-wheel hose wagon past The Big 5 & 10 Cents Store.  The bottom row depicts 3 white horses pulling a water tower and 3 brown horses pulling a steam engine past an Opera House.

This brass inking register has a small aluminum tag that reads A D T TYPE NO. 4417.  in 1874 over 50 different telegraph companies merged to become American District Telegraph. In 1901 ADT and Western Union Co merged.  This register is circa 1920.  It has 4 external coils and has a 10 1/2” long by 5” wide black metal base.

This 5 Gallon Copper Babcock Soda Acid Extinguisher has a 11 3/4” tall by 7” wide brass label with operating and recharging instructions.  The bottom of the label reads MADE BY AMERICAN-LAFRANCE FIRE ENGINE CO, ELMIRA N.Y.  Below the large label there is a very small brass label that reads S.F.HAYWARD & CO, SALES AGENTS, 20 WARREN ST, NEW YORK, N.Y.  The hose is very brittle and in poor condition but is complete with a nozzle and shut off valve.  It has one carrying strap.  The overall condition of the copper is very good with a couple very minor dents.

This 10” diameter by 27 1/2” tall copper extinguisher has 2 copper labels.  The 3 3/4” by 2 1/2” rectangular label reads FIRE EXTINGUISHER, PATENTED F. CARLIER'S, PATENT APR 13, 1869, UNITED STATES, MONNET & CO, PARIS.  The oval label reads BATE & PINKHAM, A609, PATENTED MARCH 30, 1869.  It has two strap rings near the top and two strap rings near the bottom.  The straps are missing.  It has a shut-off valve with a threaded end for a hose but the hose is missing.

This 11” tall by 8” diameter black leather bucket has a leather reinforced hemp rope handle with appears to be original.  If it is not original, it was replaced a long long time ago.  It has age cracks but would still old water.  The leather loops that attach to the steel handle rings are fragile.

Framed and matted together in an oak frame 34 1/2” wide by 15 1/2” tall, this is actually 5 photos of officers.  The center cutout is 8 1/2” tall and contains a photo of the Chief as indicated by the 5 crossed trumpets.  There are two 4 1/2” cutouts on each side of the center cutout which each contain photos of officers with 3 crossed trumpets on their insignia.  All 5 are wearing double-breasted dress jackets of the style from the late 1800s.  The officer on the far left is wearing a badge that reads DISTRICT CHIEF S.F.D.  The framers label reads ART PICTURE STORE, F. JARVIS PROPRIETOR, GODDARD ST, SOUTHBRIDGE. The photos are most likely of Southbridge, Mass firefighters because there is a  Goddard Street in the center of Southbridge, the owner of the photo lives in the area and the letters S.F.D. are on the officers badges.

Lot includes one round cardboard canister 6” all by 5” diameter and one pouch 4 1/2” tall by 3” wide by 1” deep.  There is a depiction of a steam engine racing to a fire on the front and back of the canister and the same depiction on the front of the pouch. Both read SWEET TIP TOP BEATS ALL!  SMOKE AND CHEW.  Both also read MFD BY LIGGETT & MYERS TOBACCO CO., successor to Gradle & Strotz Chicago, IL.  The canister is empty and in good condition.  The pouch has small amounts of tobacco leaking out.

When assembled the wooden fireboat model is 25” long.  It is by Midwest Products Co of Hobart, Indiana.  Once assembled, a kit to make the deck guns pump water and a kit with an electric motor and radio control device will be needed to use it in the water.  As is it will make a nice display piece.

This lime green grenade is embossed on 3 of it's 4 diamond shaped panels.  They read HAYWARD'S HAND FIRE GRENADE, PATENTED AUG 8 1871 and S F HAYWARD 407 BROADWAY NEW YORK.  It is 6” tall.  It has a 3/4” by 3/4” piece missing at the top.  Almost half of it's contents remain.  The stopper is intact.  If turned upside down it WILL LEAK.

This depiction of a firefighter wearing a bib front shirt with a crossed hook and ladder and the number 3 on it is in a papier-mβchι molded case that is trimmed with gold colored paint around the outside edge and is in good condition.  The firefighter is also wearing a parade hat and belt keeper that appears to be metal.

This white belt has black trim.  The keeper is also white with black trim.  The belt has a black cut-out with white leather letters that read 2 TORRENT 2.  The keeper has two black cut-outs.  The top cut-out reads HINGHAM and the bottom reads F. D.  It is mounted on a pine board.  The Torrent #2 is a Hunneman hand engine serial #291 that was delivered to Hingham, MA in 1846.

This hand-engraved badge reads MEADVILLE across the top and FIRE DEPT across the bottom.  There is an oval in the middle with metal cut-outs exposing the number 216.  The badge is 1 1/2” tall and the pin is intact.

This Dietz Fire King lantern with a clear globe is unusual because it has a wire spiral handle on top of the bail which appears to be original.  It has a copper base and a steel frame.  There are several rust holes near the base.  One of the locking clips for the flip-up cage is missing.

This depiction of a firefighter wearing a red bib front shirt with the word clerk on it and the number 1 on his belt keeper is in a papier-mβchι molded case that has a floral design. It measures 2 7/8” tall by 2 1/2” wide and is in very good condition.  Clerk is spelled backwards which is typical of ambrotypes.

Four sets of Philadelphia F.D. song lyrics circa 1860 including the Franklin Hose Song, the Green Monsters Song, the Good Will Hose song and Ancient Rams No. 2 of Southwalk.  Fire department lyrics from this time period often bring $20 each at paper shows.

Both pieces are from Ellsworth Maine.  The black belt has a red cut-out with white leather letters that read 1 TICONIC.  It had a 2nd number 1 but it is now missing.  It has a helmet hanger which is permanently attached.  The black front has a red cut-out with white leather letters that read TICONIC and 2 1/2” tall white cut-out in the shape of the number 1.  The back side of the front has leather missing.

This No. 1 Harden blue footed hand grenade with a quilted pattern is 6 1/4” tall.  The stopper is intact with normal chipping around the top and its contents still remain.  There is an unreadable paper label on one of the four panels.

This Currier & Ives print titled THE GREAT FIRE AT BOSTON, NOVEMBER 9th & 10th 1872, is framed and matted.  The depiction, measuring 8” by 12 5/8”, shows the river in the foreground with over a dozen boats and ships.  Aboard the boats the occupants are watching Boston burn in the background. The wooden frame is gold colored and measures 13” by 17”.  There is some very minor staining around the title area.

One side of this 2 3/4” tall by 1 1/2” wide match safe depicts a two-story two-bay firehouse and is signed RIVERSIDE NO. 11, READING, PA.  The other side depicts a four-wheel wagon with a driver and two horses.

The special St Louis MO door on this alarm makes it unusual.  The key guard is cast into the door.  Citizens had to break the glass to access the alarm, but fire department personnel could access it via a key hole to the right of the guard.  Most key guards have a key hole at the top of the guard.  This box is empty.

This framed Currier & Ives print is titled BURNING OF THE OCEAN MONARCH OF BOSTON IN THE ENGLISH CHANNEL AUGUST 24TH 1848.  Under the title there are four lines which describe the event.  218 were saved and 178 were lost.  Four ships participated in the rescue.

This red bib-front shirt has two 3” tall black letters that read J V on the bib.  The label reads CAIRNS & BRO FIREMENS EQUIPMENTS NEW YORK.  All but one of the buttons are covered with red fabric.  The sleeve buttons are missing.  It is in very good condition, with the exception of the black J V letters.

Both bottles are brown, empty, have 12 sides and measure 11” tall and 2 1/4” in diameter. One bottle has a paper label that reads CARBONA FIRE EXTINGUISHER with a depiction of a firefighter.  The label is 75% complete had has been taped to prevent further loss.  The bottom is embossed CARBONA.  The label on the second bottle reads PYROFITE FLUID FIRE EXTINGUISHER, PULL CORK, DASH CONTENTS ON FIRE, MAN'FD BY J.C. CROSS MFG. CO. INC, NEW YORK. The bottom in embossed E X O 3.

This rare Sterling Fire Alarm Co Transmitter is in a red metal case that is 14 3/4” tall by 14 3/4” with by 6” deep.  The top of the case has a Sterling decal that is 95% intact. The door has a 12 by 12” glass window.  Inside there are pegs for 20 code wheels.  It appears to be in working order.  There are no Sterling transmitter code wheels, but there are 10 Gamewell alarm box code wheels which can probably be altered o work by drilling out the center hold and adding a drive hole.

This City of Boston Fire Department Atlas of Fire District No 4, Sub-District Ladder Co. No. 1 is 30” by 21”.  William Arthur Reilly is listed as Fire Commissioner on the cover and title pages. He was Commissioner from 1938 o 1946 so this atlas was probably printed during that time period.  It includes  colored sectional maps that are near Haymarket Square along Washington Street.  The maps show fire escapes, sprinkler systems, types of roofs, pipe stands, hydrants, alarm boxes, elevators, number of stories, gas tanks and much more.

Very unusual turtle gong because this has a red rewind reminder flag that swings out between its 10” diameter brass bell and its 11 1/4” diameter black base when it needs to be rewound.  It has a 3 3/8” diameter brass gear with 100 plus teeth that engages the wind-up pin.  The mechanism that controls the brass gear is intact but the mechanism between the gear and the flag is missing.  The Gamewell logo is embossed on the base and it has 2 external terminals.

This 1930s Kingsbury red toy Fire Station number 8 has three windows on each side and green doors.  There is a wind-up mechanism on the roof that rings the bell, opens the doors and flips open the alarm box on the side of the building.  It is 19 3/8” long, 8 3/4” wide and 10” high.

This 1930s Kingsbury Aerial Ladder Wagon is 18” long.  It has a wind-up motor that turns one of the rear wheels and propels the wagon.  It has spoked wheels and a release mechanism which raises the main ladder.  The ladder is broken but appears repairable.  It has two 9” auxiliary ladders.

This Morristown, NH white Cairns Flint Flex helmet has a gold leaf painted front that reads CHIEF across the top and M.F.D. across the bottom.  The letters are black with red trim and there are 5 crossed trumpets in the middle.  The top of the front has some leather missing.  The paper label reads FLINT FLEX, HARDNESS TO RESIST BLOWS, FLEXIBILITY TO AVOID CRACKING.  It has a liner, ear flaps, chin strap and hanging ring.

60 Stereoscopic cards in the original box.  The top of the box reads SAN FRANCISCO EARTHQUAKE AND FIRE.  The cards depict the ruins and the life of victims after the disaster.  There are no depictions of the actual fire.  There are no two cards the same and the back of each card has extensive information about the earthquake and fire.  These appear to be colored lithos rather than actual photos.

This white leather dress cap front has 3 cut-outs all of which have black leather letters.  The letters in the top cut-out read EAGLE, the middle HOSE and the bottom CONCORD.  The owner has provenance to show this front is from Concord, NH rather than Concord, MA.

This F.D.N.Y. inner mechanism box, commonly called a tombstone box, has a code wheel with the number 860 and a Gamewell mechanism.  The door has a pull knob instead of a key and the instructions read PULL THIS HANDLE DOWN.  It appears to be a transitional door as it has 2 handle holes, one of which is blocked off.

Made to look like a New York City O'Brien style fire alarm box, this case iron bank has an arched top and is 4 1/4” tall, 2 1/2” wide and 1 5/8” deep.  The door reads TO SEND FIRE ALARM PULL and it bears tag #3-9-13.  The coin slot is exposed when the spade handle is pulled.  A small magnet holds the handle closed.  The back has a mounting slot and reads D-3043 JAPAN.

This 12” tall leather 1960s reproduction fire bucket has a gold-colored banner painted across the top with the word FRIENDSHIP and a gold-colored banner painted across the bottom with the words HOSE CO NO 2.  In the middle there are two clasped hands with unusually lacy cuffs plus a gold-colored star.  The clasped hands look like those on the Baltimore Equitable Society fire marks.  It is 19” tall when handle is upright.

This unusual 2 Gallon Quell brand copper extinguisher has a red & black graphic label that depicts a ghost carrying fire about his head while riding a horse.  The label bears the claim QUELL ECLIPSES FIRE and the words THE FIFTH HORSEMAN are in parentheses.  It has copper rivets around the top and along the vertical seam.  The directions TO USE TURN EXTINGUISHER UPSIDE DOWN make it a soda acid.

This 30” long underwriters pipe made by Powhatan B&I Works of Ranson, W.Va. Is in very good condition.  The discharge end is polished and  has an 1 1/8” orifice.  The red twine bears a black stencil that reads UNDERWRITERS.

This No. 1 Harden blue footed hand grenade with a quilted pattern is 6 1/4” tall.  The stopper and contents are missing.  It has normal chipping around the top.

This 5 3/4” tall white helmet front has an arched cut out with white leather letters that read BAY STATE.  Under the arch there is a 2 1/2” tall number 1.  The location of the three pin holes suggest the front is from the 1800s.  Three Hunneman hand engines, serial #341 of Templeton, MA, #282 of Middleboro, MA and #485 also of Middleboro, were all named Bay State #1.  The back has minor problems

This cast aluminum alarm box receptacle (HARP) came off a pedestal in Rockville Center, Long Island New York.  When in service, it probably housed a SAFA alarm box.  It is 29 1/2” tall by 15 3/4” wide by 13” deep.  The back side access plate is embossed with the letters R C F D.  Inside there is a mounting bar on which an alarm box can be attached.

This 9” diameter round advertising thermometer has a Fahrenheit gauge hat starts at 36◦ below zero and stops at 124 above. It has a white face with green lettering.  In the middle there is a 3” circle with a depiction of Ben Franklin and a hand engine in the foreground and a three story burning building in the background.  Inside the circumference it reads THE FRANKLIN FIRE INSURANCE CO OF PHILADELPHIA 1829.  Under the circle it reads YOU MAY DELAY, BUT TIME WILL NOT. Benjamin Franklin. Arched across the bottom it reads FIRE AND MARINE INSURANCE.

One hand colored print, framed and matted, of an engraving of a Fireman's Parade.  Frame is 10 1/4” tall by 14” wide.  The back is signed 1866 which is probably the date of the engraving.  Included is a framed and matted print of a photo depicting three white horses pulling a steam engine.  The 17 1/2” wide by 14” tall photo is copyrighted by A. Dreyfuss.  The flat wooden frame is 23” wide by 19” tall and is gold-colored.

This cast iron Gamewell Alarm Box has an instructional door that reads FOR FIRE, BREAK GLASS, OPEN DOOR, PULL HANDLE DOWN ONCE, LET GO.  The letters are highlighted with white paint and the bolts of lightening are highlighted in yellow. It has tag #346 and a T-shaped trap lock key.  The empty inner box that comes with it can not be bolted in because the holes in the outer box have been filled in with solder.

This cone shaped brass extinguisher is unusual because the discharge is not on the pointed end of the cone but 7” down on the side of the cone.  28 1/2” tall when the plunger is extended and 27” when it is not.  The back seam is riveted, two of which are used to attached the handle.  There is a brass tag near the bottom that reads MADE IN ENGLAND 1954 TO BRITISH STANDARD SPECIFICATION NO 13/1948 TESTED TO 350 LB/SQ IN. The base diameter is 8 1/2”.

Those signed EASTMAN include a 2 1/2” intake by 1 3/4” orifice, a 2” intake by 1 3/4” orifice, a 1 1/2” intake by 1 1/8” orifice and a 1 1/2” intake by 1”.  The remaining pieces are stamped with the word TEST. Two of these have 2 1/2” intakes with threaded discharges and the remaining six have threaded intakes with orifices ranging from 7/8” to 1 1/2”.  All six lead tips interchange with the two base tips.

Five tine tube extinguishers.  A Liberty, King Fire, Improved, Inso and Pyro No. 5.  All are about 22” long except the Pyro which is 16” long.  They are all in fair to poor condition.

3 Underwriters nozzles.  The one in the best condition has a tip and the other two do not.  There is not red string on any of them and the best one is 40% buffed.

15 small fire trucks including 8 Tootsies, 2 pressed tin signed made in Japan, 1 rubber, 1 FDNY 1948 LaFrance  ERTL #B848 in original box, a 1937 Ahren-Fox ERTL Stock #19528 in original box and 2 others signed made in France.  Plus 1 Matchbox fire boat and an Atari video game named Fire Fighter

 

217   Play Pipe                                                                          $25

This 33” long 2-piece play pipe came from a fife boat in the Baltimore MD area.  The intake is bigger than 2 1/2” but smaller than 3”.  The discharge tip has been cut down making the orifice 1 3/4”.

Over 35 different patches are in this lot.  Included are 4 FDNY, Rescue 2, Rescue 5, Eng 82, Rockaway Park, Ladder & Rescue 1 Boston, General Electric Lynn, Syracuse 5 Military, 3 Canadian and MA State Police Fire Marshall.  Plus Swampscott, Ipswich, Groveland, Pittsfield, West Newbury, Cambridge, Nahant and Topsfield, MA.  Also Nashua and Hudson, NH, Los Angeles Paramedic, Proctor and Yukon.

 

219   Alarm box                                                                         $30

This small Gamewell cottage style herculite alarm box has a quick action bulls door.  The glass bulls eye is missing.  The sending mechanism reads 110 VOLT .2 AMPS GAMEWELL TYPE M 2513.  It is 8 5/8” wide and 12 1/2” tall and is designed to work in conjunction with a master box.

 

220   Extinguisher Lot                                                                Pass

Two 10” tall READY SENIOR FIRE BOMBS made in Rochester MN by the Fire Control Dist. Co.  One has a paper label and the other does not.  Also included is a cone shaped hanging extinguisher with a grey plastic base.  This lot can NOT be shipped.

 

221   Ceramic Lot                                                                      $10

Lot includes a decanter titled THE AMERICAN FIREMAN depicting a 1860s firefighter in front of a burning house, a 2-bay Dickens keepsake fire station, single bay brick fire station celebrating the 65th anniversary of State Farm Insurance.  And a 4-story station with the date 1851 on the top and HOPE HOSE CO over the main door.

 

222   Paper Lot                                                                          $10

Lot includes 3 pieces of sheet music by Harry J. Lincoln.  THE FIRE MASTER, STILL ALARM and THE MIDNIGHT FIRE ALARM.  3 pages of advertising from the Saturday Evening Post, all depicting fire trucks.  CENTRAL MUTUAL PROPERTY INS, EATON 2-SPEED TRUCK AXLES and INS CO OF NORTH AMERICA.  A Firefoam advertisement depicting a burning building at the end of the horse drawn era.  Also a 10 1/2” y 14” faded photo of 6 white horses hooked to a steam engine.

Lot includes a 5” Matchbox 1932 Ford open cab fire truck, a 4 1/2” Matchbox 1938 Mercedes fire truck, 12” tall Real Heroes FDNY firefighter with Scott pack, axe mask, helmet, halligan bar and turnout gear.  A 1926 Mack rotary pumper model that has one of it's wheels broken off and come with a display board.  All 4 are in their original boxes.

 

225   Extinguisher Lot                                                             $25

Two Jet Stream Automatic fire extinguishers with original boxes.  The top, bottom and sides of each box all have graphics and instructions.  The manufacturer claims this product is 10 to 16 times less toxic and 3 times more effective than carbon tet.  Both are empty and come wit  a bracket and hanger.  The aluminum housings are dented.  One box is in good condition and the other needs the seam glued.  Additionally this lot includes a brass Stempel one quart extinguisher with the unusual instruction to PLACE CORD AROUND NECK.

This chrome-plated bulldog came off a 1973 Mack Jersey City F.D. Engine.

 

227   Oak Case                                                                          $20

This 15” tall by 11” wide by 8” deep oak case has the word CHIEF etched on the top between 2 brass hasps.  It has a 1 1/2” wide carrying strap.  It probably housed a flow measuring instrument.

 

228   Grenade Kit                                                                       $20

SureStop grenade kit.  Metal box with handle containing 5 clear and 1 red  fire grenades. The finish on the red metal case is in poor condition.  This lot can NOT be shipped.

8 photos of Boston fire boats Engine 47 & 44 mounted on board and framed with no glass.  Measures 25 by 22 1/2”.

This black British cork helmet has a 2 1/4” round brass detail that depicts a deer with a large set of antlers.  It is signed HELMETS LTD WHEATHAMPSTEAD, HERTS, ENGLAND.

 

231   Paper Lot                                                                          $20

Includes two 1866 Portsmouth NH Mechanic Fire Society notices, a nice water-colored drawing of a hand engine and Union hose reel, 1840 copy of Constitution of the Mechanic Fire Society.  This Society was founded in 1811.  This constitution has what appears to be a list of members and their addresses.  Also in the lot a Honolulu Fire Dept history, a BOX for a FIRE BALL automatic Christmas tree fire extinguisher, 9 issues of THE FIRE TRUCK magazine dating May 1990 thru December 1990 and March 1992 with an article titled THE LAST PETER PIRSCH FIRE TRUCK.
