This running fireman front holder/finial is signed CHS D.P. WATTERS, N.Y. PAT FEB 27, 1892.  The fireman is wearing a bib front shirt, high eagle helmet and is speaking into a working trumpet.  3 of the 4 mounting holes are in good condition.  The 4th is split but useable.  The signed side is tarnished more than the other side.

This framed Boston Fire Alarm Telegraph directory, dated April 15 1871, measures 19” tall by 15” wide.  Lists boxes 2 thru 361 by neighborhood.

H.T. Gratacap Leather Helmet with Leather High Eagle Front says FOREMAN HOSE 24. 1860s vintage helmet.

 

004   Alarm Box                                                                        325

This 12 1/4 “ tall Sector 4 Gamewell alarm box has an 1880 style solid door.  It has brass tag #29, a matching code wheel and a Cole key guard.  The peak of the roof has a slanted fist.  Inside it has a round sector 4 sending mechanism with it's original painted stencil that reads PULL CRANK CLEAR DOWN AND LET GO.  Very hard to find.

 

005   Siren                                                                                 450

This Type H Sterling hand crank siren is in working order, has Serial No. 9761 and comes complete with a mounting bracket.  The name tag reads STERLING SIRE FIRE HORN, THE INTERSTATE MACHINE PRODUCTS CO, ROCHESTER, NY.

 

006   Helmet                                                                              775

This 64 comb white high eagle helmet has a white front with three red cut-outs.  Both the top and bottom cut-outs have 1/2 “ tall white leather letters.  The top cut-out reads SALEM and the bottom reads ORG 1891.  The center cut-out has a 3 1/2 “ tall black leather scramble that reads VFA.  The liner has a sewn-on label that reads A.W. DOLFINI & CO MANUFACTURERS 140 NASSAU ST. NEW YORK.  The bottom side of the back brim is stamped with the same information.  The brim design is a series of oak leaves.  It does not have and has never had a hanging ring.  The inside of the liner is signed J.J. WELCH.  This helmet is in very good condition.

 

007   Indicator                                                                           7900

This 3-digit oak Gamewell visual indicator with a 15 “ electro-mechanical gong is 52 1/2” long and 18 1/4” wide near the top.  The 3 “ by 1 1/8 “ brass tag on the bottom of the upper door reads THE GAMEWELL FIRE ALARM TELEGRAPH CO. NEW YORK.  The mechanism is signed in two places.  The bottom of the bottom door is arched to match the circumference of the brass gong.  The wood has a light blond patina.  Both doors have brass rimmed key holes in the glass.  The upper door key-hole cover is missing.  Everything else appears complete and very clean.  A wind-up key is included.

 

008   Helmet                                                                              675

A.F. Spawn High Eagle Helmet.  Front says ENGINE 43 P.F.D. This helmet is probably from the Philadelphia Fire Department.

 

009   Lantern                                                                             1000

This nickel-plated Dietz Fire King lantern reads WHITE on the front panel.  White is written with raised cursive letters.  The White Motor Company of Cleveland, OH made fire trucks in the teens & twenties.  This lantern has a red globe, bears the patent date Aug 27, 07 and appears to be complete.  The kerosene reservoir has several stress cracks.  White Fire King lanterns are very hard to find.
 

010   Pedestal                                                                           Pass

This 7 foot tall aluminum pedestal saw service in Hartford CT.  The top half has a 1951 style Gamewell Alarm box with tag #324 and a matching code wheel.  It is clean and appears to be in good working order.  Below the alarm box there is an access door that reads FIRE DEPT CABLES.  The bottom half of the pedestal is made of 2 vertical pieces that bolt together.  The base has 14 flutes, an access panel and a 13 1/4 “ diameter foot with 4 bolt holes.

 

011   Presentation Front                                                             3050

The 9 “ tall silver-plated over white brass hand engraved Presentation Front is bordered by a vine & berry motif.  At the top there is a fireman's scramble with parade torch, trumpet, pike pole, ladder and entrance tool, under which there are two 1 1/4 “ stars that have stars within the star.  Under the stars it reads TORRENT 3.  Below it the main inscription which reads;  PRESENTED TO HENRY FOBES, ASS'T FOREMAN BY THE VOLUNTEERS OF TORRENT ENGINE CO. NO. 3.  DORCHESTER JUNE 4TH, 1855.

 

012   Gong                                                                                2250

This weight driven Moses Crane House gong has an 8 “ brass bell with an internal hammer.  The mechanism is signed MADE BY MOSES G. CRANE, BOSTON, PAT AUG 11, '68.  The 9 “ wide access door has a brass covered hole in the glass window for the wind-up key.  The wood has a reddish brown color and is probably walnut, but could be mahogany.  It is 27 3/4” long by 11 1/8” wide by 5 1/8” deep.  The lock is missing.  Gamewell bought out Moses Crane on Oct 5, 1886 dating this gong sometime between 1868 and 1886.

 

013   Nozzle                                                                              75

This brass nozzle is marked C. CALLAHAN'S PAT FEB 3, 1886. Overall Length is 23”.  Body of nozzle wrapped in leather but riveted leather handles are fragile - close to breaking.  Discharge tip does not seat fully.  Shut-off is gear driven.

 

014   Helmet                                                                              950

High Lion black leather helmet has white front that reads VICE PRESIDENT on top and N.L.R. on bottom.  The center scramble reads A F C.  Helmet has liner, no mfg tag but is possible Wilson.

 

015   Extinguisher                                                                      500

This Maxim plated apparatus extinguisher is from the 1930s.  The rivets on  the back seam and the base both date this extinguisher.  It is different than most apparatus extinguishers because the strap is vertical.  Condition is very good.

 

016   Alarm Box                                                                        300

This half glass Gamewell Sector 4 alarm box has a 2 3/8 “ wide by 1 1/2 “ tall brass tag #16.  It has a 5 1/2 “ diameter round inner sending mechanism with instructions that read PULL LEVER WAY DOWN LET GO.  The instructions are visible thru the glass in the door.  The box has been painted recently but the sending mechanism has not.  There is a straight fist in the peak of the roof which dates this box to 1906.  It comes with a brass key.

 

017   Lamp                                                                                700

This nickel plated Somerville MA engine lamp has a round red glass etched GEO H. FOSTER 3.  Manufacturers stamp reads VOURSNEY BROS MAKERS 389 BROOME ST NEW YORK.  19 1/2” tall.

 

018   Alarm Box                                                                         275

This Metropolitan model Star Electrical Alarm Box is larger than most cottage style boxes.  The door has brass tag#18 and reads FOR FIRE, INSERT KEY UNLOCK AND OPEN THE DOOR, PULL KNOB DOWN ONCE AND LET GO.  The bottom of the door is signed STAR ELECTRIC COMPANY, BINGHAMTON, N.Y. U.S.A.  Some Star boxes have Ideal mechanisms but Metropolitan model boxes have mechanism that is unique to Star.  The box includes 2 brass locks which have been removed due to lack of keys.

This nicely framed and matted 1858 Currier & Ives medium folio print titled FACING THE ENEMY is from the American Fireman Series.  It depicts a fireman holding a nozzle while standing on a pile of burning rubble.  The depiction measures 13 1/4” wide by 17” tall.  There is a very small tear on the right-hand edge.

 

024   Extinguisher                                                                      40

This Gorham 2 1/2 gallon pump extinguisher is copper.  The brass label has operating instructions and is signed Gorham Equipment Co, Boston, MA.  These extinguishers were on most Boston trucks in the 1930s and early 1940s.

Olson Aluminum High Eagle Helmet.  Front says PHEONIX 2 T.F.D.  1920s vintage helmet.

Red leather bucket with gold trim and a large gold number 4 with black trim and a hanging ring on the bottom back side that indicates it is probably from a hand engine.  Handle is intact but appears to have been repaired.  Bucket measures 12 1/2” tall, 19” tall with handle up and is 7” in diameter.

The Automobile Fire Apparatus Operator book by Robert H. McNeish 2nd Edition 1926.  Spine in rough by complete condition.

 

028   Trumpet                                                                          700

This 16 1/4 “ tall silver plated presentation trumpet is signed PRESENTED TO CHARLES N. TALLADAY FOREMAN BY UNION HOSE CO NO. 5 AS A TOKEN OF THEIR ESTEEM 1873.   It is in very good condition.  The bell diameter is 6 1/2 “.  This trumpet has not been polished.  It includes a red cord with a very large tassel.

 

029   Alarm Box                                                                        700

The curved arch on the door of the 1878 Utica Alarm box is embossed with a raised foliage design.  The door reads FIRE ALARM STATION, has a brass tag #11 and has a trap lock with key.  The pin on the lower door hinge is broken.  The box is 11 3/4” tall by 7” wide by 5” deep.  The inner sending mechanism is very unusual.  From 1876 to Sept 12 1879 Utica was known as Barber Jones & Palmer.

This 18 “ tall silver plated trumpet reads PRESENTED TO BOSTON STEAM FIRE ENGINE COMPANY H.  UPHAM NO. 21 BY RICH AND STETSON PROPRIETORS OF THE HOWARD ATHENAEUM IN CONSIDERATION OF THEIR NOBLE SERVICE PERFORMED AT THE BOSTON FIRE NOV 9 1872.  The mouth piece is damaged and has been replaced.  It has some dents & dings.  The diameter of the bell is 8 1/2”.

This plated Deitz tubular lantern is signed FIRE-DEP'T, DEITZ NEW YORK, U.S.A.  The lift off cage is signed PATENTED JAN-1-89 and it has 6 other patent dates the last of which is MCH 21, 93.  The reservoir is shorter than a Fire King and the clear globe is old, possibly the original.  The lower corners of the frame have been repaired.  The repairs appear to have been made a long time ago.


 

042   Firemark                                                                           100

This cast iron oval United Firemen's Ins Co of Philadelphia PA plaque is 11 1/4” wide by 8 13/16” tall.  The steam engine relief is high and the wheels have 8 spokes.  The color of the rust on the back side indicates that it may be original.

 

043   Sign                                                                                  250

This white porcelain enamel insurance sign reads CONTINENTAL FIRE INSURANCE CO, NEW YORK.  It also has a depiction of a Continental Army soldier in uniform carrying a musket.  The sign is 12” tall by 16” wide.  It has a few very minor chips in the edges.  Very nice original piece for fire, sign and insurance collectors!

 

044   Trumpet                                                                           475

This silver plated trumpet is 16 1/2” tall.  The diameter of the bell is 5 3/4”.  The inside of the bell is polished and lacquered brass.

 

045   Slate Board                                                                      pass

Made for mounting a register and take-up reel (which are not included) this slate board is 1 1/4” thick, 4 feet long and 1 foot deep.  It has a small brass manufacturers tag with the Gamewell logo on top, THE GAMEWELL CO. NEWTON, MASS in the middle and the number 1110 on the bottom.  Under the tag is the number E 224 painted in orange.  It saw service at Pease Air Force Base in NH.

 

046   Presentation Pitcher                                                          450

This silver-plate presentation water service stands 17 1/2” tall and 13” at it's deepest.  It is 4-part, stand, pitcher, rim w/lid & chalice.  The top of the pitcher's cover reads PRESENTED TO C.H.& L. Co. No.1 BY BURR DAVES & SON 1888.  The "C" stands for Clinton of Mt. Vernon, New York.  There are floral hammer decorations over the silver plate.  The chalice, pitcher, top lid & stand are all marked Reed & Barton, with the pitcher showing patent date 1878.  The split spout and ice strainer make this one of Reed & Bartons best.

This Badger Fire Extinguisher label says Methuen, MA.  It is believed to have come from the Bell telephone factory that was located in North Andover, MA.  It is marked Bell System KS-6878 on the label.

This black belt with white trim has a red cut-out with white leather letters that read MERRIMACPORT.  The keeper is also black with white trim.  It has a red cut-out with a 2 “ tall white leather number 3.  Both inner belts are intact.  Merrimacport is on the Merrimack River in Merrimac, MA.

This framed Constitution and Bylaws of the Alert Volunteer Fire Association of Mattapan, organized 1860, measures 22” tall by 18” wide.

This red parade belt with black trim has a black cut-out with white leather letters that read RESCUE.  On either side of the word rescue is a white 5-point star cut-out. The buckle and inner belt are intact, there is no keeper.

Large framed retirement certificate of Lewis P. Webber.  Dated March 29 1901.  Measures 35 1/2” tall by 30” wide.  Chief of Dept Wm. T. Cheswell, who was also the first President of the NESFVL (1890-1900).

 

054   Alarm Box                                                                         185

This cast iron Gamewell NY Alarm Box has a slanted fist in the peak of the roof.  It has a non-instructional door with tag #345 and matching code wheel.  The outer door reads FIRE ALARM TELEGRAPH STATION.  The inner door reads PULL THE HOOK DOWN ONCE AND LET GO.

 

055   Alarm                                                                                115

The unsigned tapper on the upper half of this fire alarm has a 3 1/2 “ bell with an external hammer.  The bottom half of this fire alarm has a 5 “ tall by 3 1/4 “ wide red cast iron box with gold-colored letters and decorations.  The front of the box reads FIRE ALARM and the top reads J.H. BUNNELL & CO. U.S.A.  Both the tapper and the box are mounted on a 16 “ long by 5 “ wide oak board that is hollowed out on the back side to make room for the wiring.

 

056   Match Safe                                                                        350

This match safe has the same image on each side.  The raised images depict 2 firemen wearing high front helmets and extremely long turn out coats.  They are holding a long nozzle between them and appear to be playing water onto a fire.  The safe is worn, probably from being carried in a pocket for years.  The flip cover has a soldered repair but works fine.  We believe this safe to be manufactured by a metalworking firm founded in Newark, NJ in 1855 by William B. Kerr.  The Kerr Company produced designs in the Art Noveau Style.  Gorham Corp purchased the Kerr Company in 1906.  Please note, this match safe is NOT marked, but we have had it tested and it is sterling silver.

This oak framed photo of crushed Boston FD helmets from Feb 5 1898 fire on Merrimac Street in which 6 firefighters lost their lives.

This 63 “ long by 42 “ tall print of a double air button hand engine named Young America #1 is on a plaster board.  It reads THE PRIDE OF OUR CITY on the hard suction carrier.  To the right of the hand engine there is a fire fighter in dress uniform holding a trumpet and directly behind the hand engine are 4 horses, 3 of which have riders.  In the background there are two 3-story buildings with the business names of Wallace & Bryant, Stone & OConnor and Craig & Rannells on them.  The left edge has a water stain and there is a 1 “ tear at the top of the brakes.  This print is impressive and seems to command attention.

10 “ nickel plated chain pull house gong mounted on a board.  The inside of the bell is marked Blake Bell Co. Hooper & Co Trade Mark Boston Mass.

 

061   Alarm Box                                                                         175

This cast iron Gamewell New York Alarm Box has a slanted fist in the peak of the roof.  It has a Cole key guard and brass tag #81 and matching code wheel.  The door reads FOR FIRE BREAK THE GLASS OPEN THE DOOR PULL HOOK DOWN ONCE AND LET GO.  It appears to be in good working order.  It was recently painted red and the raised door letters are painted white.

063   Shaving Mug                                                                      175

Original occupational shaving mug with former owner's name F. Codrington.  Has wonderful hand-painted design of steam fire engine with two horses.  Probably late 19th or early 20th Century in origin. Gold lettering & trim at rim.  Hairline at rim descending into mug, will not effect function or display.  Stands 4” tall and 3 1/2” interior diameter.

 

064   Bell                                                                                   270

This 7 1/4 “ diameter brass bell comes with a mounting bracket.  The bracket has been bent.  The height from the bottom of the bracket to the top of the finial is 13 1/4 “.  The height from the bottom of the bell to the top of the finial is 10 1/4”.  The bell needs to be cleaned.  It is the right size for a small hand engine, hose reel or very early motorized truck.

 

065   Model                                                                               100

This folk art model of a Steam Fire Engine is 24” long.  The craftsmanship is a bit rough, but very careful attention was paid to even the smallest of details.  It has a lantern, 2 water gauges and 2 whistles on the boiler, hard suction carriers, brakes for the rear wheels, a floor mat, boiler door, pressure gauges, a bell and even a blanket behind the drivers seat.  The bell is mounted directly over the pressure dome.  The shafts are set up for a team of 3 horses.  The rear tool box bears the number 22 and each wheel has 16 spokes.  It comes with 3 pieces of hard suction, which may have originally been one U shaped piece that has broken over time.  This model came to the auction from Maine.  From the details it might be possible to research the manufacturer of the engine that this model was built to portray.  The age of this model is difficult to ascertain.  Some details scream old, others not.  Please preview carefully!

This nickel plated trumpet is 18” tall.  The diameter of the bell is 7 1/2 “.  It has a faded cord that was once red.  It has 6 or 7 small dents and it is big enough that it could have been used as a working trumpet.

This glass sign is in a wooden frame that measures 17” high by 23 wide.  The letters, which appear to be gold-leaf, read THE HOME INSURANCE COMPANY NEW YORK.

Early leather front for a jockey style helmet.  Black front reads L.F.D. on top.  The foot of L is missing so letter looks like an I at a glance.  A large E in the center possible standing for Engineer.  The bottom reads LUDLOW

 

069   Alarm box                                                                         115

This L.W. Bills aluminum alarm box has the minuteman logo in the peak of the roof.  The guard door swings left to right to open and says FOR FIRE OPEN DOOR.  Inside the guard door it says PULL LEVER DOWN.  The box bears the tag number 1112.  Raised lettering at the bottom of main door reads L.W. BILLS CO. LEXINGTON, MASSACHUSETTS.  The inner box door reads PULL HANDLE DOWN ONCE AND LET GO.  L.W. BILLS COMPANY P.O. BOX 218 LEXINGTON, MASS.  This box was recently tested by L.W. Bills and found to be in good working order.

 

070   Parade  Belt                                                                     160

This black belt with white trim has a red cut-out with white leather letters that read MECHANICSVILLE.  The keeper is also black with white trim.  It has a red cut-out with a 1 1/4 “ tall white leather number 1.  Both inner belts are intact but the metal buckle is missing.

 


 

071   Alarm Box                                                                         45

This oak case alarm box is 14” tall by 10” wide and 6 1/2” deep.  The front has red cast aluminum plate with a built-in hammer.  The plate reads BREAK GLASS IN CASE OF FIRE ACME F.A. CO.  Above the plate there is a 3 1/2 “ wide by 1 1/2 “ tall brass tag that has instructions for testing, fire drills and how to reset the box.  The tag reads STANDARD ELECTRIC TIME CO. SPRINGFIELD, MASS.

 

072   Pittsfield NH Lot                                                                 100

Lot includes 2 Maltese cross-shaped breast badges.  One reads ASST FOREMAN PITTSFIELD NH F.D. COMBINATION 1 and the other reads PITTSFIELD 3 F.D.  Both pins are intact.  Also in lot is a 6 3/4 “ tall by 4 3/4 “ cast aluminum automotive plate that reads PITTSFIELD 3 F.D., a 1923 Pittsfield, NH Firemen's Banquet Menu with a tiny helmet attached.  A 22nd Annual Concert & Ball Dance Card dated May 7, 1925 and primted by the Globe Manufacturing Co. of Pittsfield in poor condition.  A 1 “ wide by 3 “ long piece of a ribbon that reads P.F.D. '09 is also included.

This bullet shaped electrical siren is 14 1/2 “ long and 9 “ tall. It has a triangle shaped mounting base with a bolt hole in each corner.  The plating appears to be chrome.  It has a 2 1/2 “ long by 3/4 “ tall red manufacturers tag that reads FREE ROLLING, STERLING SIREN FIRE ALARM CO, INC, ROCHESTER, NY MODEL 30, 12 VOLTS, SERIAL 16292.  It has a couple of very minor dents.  Note: since the photo of this siren was posted for preview, it has been cleaned and a short circuiting wire was removed.

Unusual because it has a sliding cover, this ballot box comes with very old marbles.  The wood which appears to be walnut has a rich dark patina.  The voting hole is in the sliding cover.  Except for the remnants of what appear to be an old paper sticker, this box is in very good condition.  Overall length is 14 1/2”.

The brass front holder on this black leather Cairns New Yorker is signed BOSTON FIRE DEPT.  It has a black front with a white number 20.  The bottom of the back brim has a number 68 stenciled on it.  There is white reflective tape in between the combs.  It comes with a small 25 year Boston Fire Dept active service pin.  It is complete with liner, ear flaps and hanging ring.

This black parade belt with white trim has a red cut-out with 1 “ tall white leather letters that read MUTUAL.  A hand engine named Mutual, that was built by Douglas of Middleton CT, was in service in Stratford, CT.  This lends credibility to the consignors claim that this belt is from Stratford.  The keeper is black with white trim and it has a 1 1 /2 “ tall white leather number 1 in a red cut-out.  It has both inner belts.  A small amount of the white trim is missing.

This hand engraved badge reads OKOMAKAMESIT 2 MARLBORO.  The Okomakamesit is a hand engine built by Button & Blake in 1861.  This badge dates between 1869 and 1895, the years the engine was in service in Marlboro, MA.  Prior to 1869 the engine fought fires in Harrisburg, PA where it was known as GOOD WILL.  Since 1895 the engine has been in Marblehead, MA.  This badge is hallmarked A.W. MITCHELL & CO, BOSTON.

This black leather Cairns helmet belonged to Manchester, NH firefighter Harold "PIP" Adams.  His badge #488 is on the back brim.  This helmet is being sold with 3 of his fronts.  A red front that reads ENG CO 1 MANCHESTER, which is on the helmet, a black front which reads M.F.D. FIRE PREV INSPECTOR and a black front which reads ENGINE 10 M.F.D.  Pip started as a volunteer in Milford, NH.  He then worked for the Manchester F.D. where he climbed thru the ranks, as seen by his badges in lot 81.

This black Cairns leather high eagle helmet was service in Donora PA.  It has a black front with 3 white cut-outs.  All the letters in the top cut-out are missing except a & sign.  The bottom cut-out reads DONORA WORKS.  The center cut-out is in the shape of a shield and has a 2 1/4 “ tall sewn-on number 3.  All the letters and numbers are red.  It has a felt liner, hanging ring and a brass ventilator tag.  It has been repainted.  Note - American Steel had a plant in Donora, PA.

This black leather S. Logiudice helmet was in service in the New York City Borough of Staten Island.  Organized in 1903, it is 1 of the last 2 active volunteer companies in the city.  The front of the helmet has 2 red cut-outs with 1/2 “ tall white leather letters.  The top cut-out reads RICHMOND and the bottom ENG CO.  There is a 2 “ tall sewn-on white number 1 in the middle.  The brim and crown designs on this helmet identify it as a Logiudice.  See page 39 of EARLY FIRE HELMETS by Arnold Merkitch.  It has a hanging ring, wool liner and ear flaps.  It has seen service but is in very good condition.  Logiudice was located in Manhattan on MacDougal Street in the 1920s and 30s.  He worked for Cairns before leaving to start his own business.

This tintype depicts a seated fire fighter wearing a white high-front helmet, dress shirt with long cuffs and a parade belt.  The helmet and belt both bear the number 4.  Both numbers appear backwards as is often found in tintypes.  The shirt has several buttons but no bib.  The case is molded papier-mβchι and has a woman holding flowers over her head on the front.  The back side of the case has a floral design inside an oval.

This tintype depicts a fire fighter standing next to a very large pedestal with a very ornate presentation trumpet & hat atop the pedestal.  The fire fighter is wearing an unusual tie that looks like the tassels on the trumpet, a dress shirt (the bottom half of which has a bit) and a parade belt that bears a backward number 1.  The case is molded papier-mβchι with floral designs on both sides.

This white parade belt has a black cut-out with 7/8 “ tall white leather letters that read EXCELSIOR.  A hand engine named Excelsior, built by Turboss, was in service in Holliston MA, lending credibility to consignors claim that this belt is from Holliston.  The belt has a 1 “ long brass tag that is signed CAIRNS & BROS 146 GRAND ST N.Y.  It has both inner belts, but the keeper is missing.

INC., ROCHESTER, N.Y.  There are some components in the box but the sending mechanism and door lock are missing.  There is some pitting and 2 small holes in the bottom of the box.  Sterling boxes are unusual because the operate on 110 volts.

This lot is 3 mugs including; a diminutive mug which appears to be trimmed with platinum glaze at rim and bottom and fully over handle.  There is minor wear to the trim at the rim.  The mug stands 4 ½” tall with the base being 3 ½” across and the top 2 ½”.  No chips or evident repairs, tho plenty of original glaze defects on the bottom rim (firing stand marks, etc).  The mug is hand-decorated with the following lettering in calligraphic style: Firemens Association of Montgomery County (Parade Trumpet depiction here) Jenkintown, Pa 1909.  Transfer Signed on bottom - Tho’s Maddock’s Son’s & Co Trenton, NJ.  This mug is shown in the book FIREFIGHTING ANTIQUES & MEMORABILIA on page 125.  The second mug is shaped like a playpipe and says POQOUNOCK BRIDGE VOL. The front door of this Gamewell Police Box has a quick-action bulls-eye door on the upper left hand corner.  The public could summon the police by pulling the lever behind the quick-action door.  A police officer with a key could open the front door to access the telephone.  The front door bears the Gamewell logo and tag #143.  It is signed SIGNALING SYSTEM, THE GAMEWELL CO, NEWTON, MASS.  The back 2/3rds of the box has dark blue paint indicating it was probably in a pedestal.

This axle nut wrench is signed AMOSKEAG on the body and PAT FEB 1, 98 on the adjustment handle.  It is 10" long and in good working order.  It is being sold with photocopies of 2 advertisements.  One depicts the actual wrench and the other is a testimonial by Chelsea MA Fire Chief Henry A. Spencer, dated July 23, 1902, of a similar axle nut wrench.

The label on this 1 1/4 gallon Pony extinguisher has green letters that read BADGERS PONY NAUTILUS WATER-FILLED FIRE EXTINGUISHER.  Besides the operating and changing instructions, it also has two depictions of a mermaid riding a sea horse.  The vertical seam on the back of this extinguisher is riveted.  Last tested in 1973 by Smith of Haverhill, Mass, this extinguisher is clean and in good condition.

Made in the shape of a fireman's helmet, this red bird house is approx 11 3/4” long by 9 1/4” wide by 5 3/4” tall.  The white front has a perch below a 1 “ hold.  It is hinged for cleaning.  It has details that include a rolled brim and a combed top.  The weather and elements have removed most of the paint but is still appears to be serviceable.

This framed and matted hand-painted Honor Roll reads "Honor Roll of Engine Co. No. 3, Our Country!  In her intercourse with foreign nations may she always be right, but our country, right or wrong.".  It also depicts a gold colored badge that reads MOUNT VERNON FIRE DEPARTMENT.  The word Vernon is hard to read, but a google search lists Gilbert Angevine, who is one of the 17 service men on the honor roll, as Past Fire Chief of the Mount Vernon, New York, Fire Department.  The name James Glatt also showed up as a firefighter in the Mount Vernon, New York Fire Department.  The Honor Roll is colored red, white and blue with gold-colored trim around the names.  The matting is silver with red and blue pin stripes.  The Honor Roll has a depictions of 2 American flags with 48 stars each, which dates it to 1959 or older, while information from our Google searches dates it from 1942 or newer, making it's age between 1942 and 1959.

This Gamewell Newton take-up reel has a brass tag with the serial #87542.  It is 8 3/4” tall and uses 1/2 “ wide tape.

 

171   Ledger Marker                                                                  80

This painted tin advertising ledger marker depicts a woman warrior figure with long spear in one hand and shield in the other.  She is standing on a snake.  The marker reads GUARDIAN ASSURANCE CO OF LONDON ESTABLISHED 1821.  The manufacturers name WELLS & HOPE CO. PHILA is printed across the bottom.  Wells & Hope were in business from 1875 to 1891 making this marker at least 118 years old.  98% of the original paint remains with age appropriate crazing.  Ledger markers are large book marks which were also used as straight edges and paper cutters. Guardian sold fire insurance.

This 56 “ long torch has a 4 “ diameter by 5 “ tall reservoir that is mounted in a hanging loop allowing it to swing.  It has a plain round wooden handle.

 

173   New Bedford Lot                                                              90

Lot includes a badge reading NEW BEDFORD VET FIREMEN #59 with firefighting scramble in the middle.  The badge is hallmarked C.G.Braxmar co. 10-12 Maiden Lane N.Y.  The pin is intact.  Also in the lot is a red ribbon.  At the top there is a depiction of a fireman wearing a high front helmet.  He is encircled with red, white and blue ribbon.  The outside ring of ribbon has some damage but it does not detract from the overall look of the ribbon.  The middle has silver letters that read NEW BEDFORD V.F.A, N.E. FIELD DAY SEPT 1, 1897, SPRINGFIELD, MASS.  It also has a depiction of a side stroke hand engine.  Across the bottom it has a row of old gold colored tassels.

A one quart brass LaFrance hand fire extinguisher.  A hard to find one gallon American LaFrance fire extinguisher refill can.  The graphics on both sides of the car are good to very good.  The can is empty.  A tin tube dry chemical extinguisher made in Haverhill MA and patented Oct 16 1906.  It is red with black letters and the graphics are poor.

This leather Cairns High Eagle Helmet is painted red.  It does not have a liner, front or hanging ring but does have hole for a hanging ring.  The front brim wire is exposed.  The back brim has a Bronx bend.

This brown bottle Carbona Fire Extinguishes has a paper label with a depiction of a fire fighter along with directions and claims.  The label is 95% intact.  This bottle has 12 sides, is 11” tall and is 2 1/4” in diameter.  It is empty and is embossed Carbona on the bottom.

This 13 1/2 “ tall cast iron bank depicts an 18th century firefighter standing next to a wooden fire hydrant.  He is wearing a red bib front shirt, blue pants, black boots and a blue helmet with a large white front.  It is cast in two vertical pieces that are screwed together.  The joint is very tight suggestive it is old, but it looks new.

 

180   Take Up Reel                                                                     20

This B&B Engineering Corporation of Norwood, Louisiana take-up reel has 2 tags.  The front tag bears the company logo.  The back tag reads SER BX, TYP. FA-88-101E, V110, A.1.  It is 8 1/2” tall, uses 1 “ tape and has an on/off switch.

 

181   Extinguisher                                                                      75

This unusual 2 gallon pump type Pyrene fire extinguisher has patent dates of Jan 16, 1923 and Dec 8, 1925.  It has a copper body with an 8 “ diameter brass base.  The base has 3 circular mounting brackets that protrude beyond the 8 “ diameter.  It is 214” tall and has a 5/8 “ diameter spyglass above the label.  It is complete and in good condition with the exception of the original hose which shows its age.

 


 

182   Toy                                                                                   50

This reproduction cast iron ladder wagon is 31” long and is being pulled by 1 white and 2 black horses.  A front driver, rear driver and 4 ladders are included.  The steering wheel tips forward so that the rear driver can be seated.  The bell on the underside of the wagon makes connecting it to the horses tricky.  It is signed but difficult to read tho the letters U.S.A. do stand out.

This black fiber Cairns helmet has a black front with 2 red cut-outs.  Neither cut-out has anything written in it.  There is a 2 1/4 “ tall number 1 sewn in the middle between the cut-outs.  It has a liner, ear flaps and hanging ring.

This 1951 style Gamewell alarm box is a master box with local energy.  The door has tag #19 with a matching code wheel.  There is a wiring diagram taped to the back side of the inside door.  It appears to be in good working order.

This 12 “ diameter nickel plated Vesta spotlight is fastened inside a yoke that allows it to move right, left, up or down when mounted on a truck.  It has a 2 “ long manufacturers tag that reads VESTA MADE IN CHICAGO, U.S.A.  The back has a handle to manually move the spotlight and the back also has a soldered repair.  It includes a wood base which allows it to be displayed in an upright position.  This brand and type of spotlight was used on Ahrens-Fox and American La France trucks in the 1920s.

Titled FIREHOUSE MEMORIES this 18 “ by 24 “ puzzle has over 600 interlocking pieces.  It is a collage of different depictions of fire fighting equipment including pumpers, steam engines, ladder trucks, helmets, lanterns and more.  The center and largest depiction is of an Ahrens-Fox pumper.  Made in the U.S.A. by Nordevco of Plainfield, NJ.  It is in the original unopened box with it's clear polyethylene wrapper.
