001 Plaque 250
This brass Gamewell manufacturers plate, usually found on early slate alarm systems, measures 6" tall by 8" wide.  It reads The Gamewell Fire Alarm Telegraph Co. New York.  The detail in the fist, at top center, allows you to see each finger and the thumbnail.  There are four mounting holes all showing slight signs of use.  The lower mounting holes are in the center of floral motifs.

36 carded dress uniform buttons including 7 gold colored from Berkeley (with Steam Engine), Columbus,  D.C.F.D. (with Capitol Building), Lackawanna, Medford, St. Louis and one Chief's button.  There are 29 silver colored from City of Baltimore, Baltimore County, Boston, Buffalo, Camden, Dayton, Detroit, Everett, Fall River, F. P. (Fire Patrol), Gary, Hartford, Hoboken, Kansas City Missouri, Lawrence, Manchester, Minneapolis, M F D, New York, Philadelphia, Portland, Savannah, Schenectady, S F F D (with Steam Engine), Syracuse, Taunton, Utica, W.F.D. and Wilmington Del F.B.

 

003 Helmet 575

This 64 Comb black leather high eagle has a red front with 3 black cut-outs.  Both the top and bottom cut-outs have white leather letters.  The top reads GEO CLAY and the bottom reads FIRE Co.  The center cut-out is a 3 inch tall number 1.  It has a liner and it is in very good condition.  The George Clay Fire Co. is in West Conshohocken PA which is between Norristown and Philadelphia.

 

004 Firemark   PASS
City Insurance Company Cincinnati Ohio 1845-1849 Firemark.  Heavy Iron casting and odd shape.  13” x 9 1/2”.  Scroll border with rowing-type fire engine manned by six firemen.  Raised lettering reads City Insurance Co. Cin. From building at Cutter Street and Carlisle Avenue, Cincinnati.  Very rare.  Issued 1846. *

 

005 Helmet 1650

This black leather Cairns high Fox helmet has an orange octagon paper label that is completely intact.  The label reads CAIRNS & BROTHERS SUCESSORS TO H.T. GRATACAP.  The bottom side of the back brim has a 2" wide oval that is signed "CAIRNS & BRO --143-- GRAND ST N.Y.  It has a black front with 3 cut-outs.  The top is red with white leather letters that read WASHINGTON.  The G is missing.  The bottom is blue with white leather letters that reas G S L.  The center is a 3⅛" tall number 4.  The helmet has a liner.  About 6" of the brim wire is exposed and the very top of the front is missing.  Just under the Foxes paws is a white cut-out star that is partially missing.

 

006 Gong 3100

This Gamewell indicator gong has an 8½ inch brass bell.  This is a Type II with added Type I finial.  This case has been previously refinished.  It measures 43” tall by 15½” wide.  It comes with a key. *

 

007  Nozzle 500

This 40 inch long tapered nozzle has a soldered seam that runs the length of it's peen hammered copper body.  The brass intake has 2 pins and appears to be for 2½ inch hose.  The brass discharge end has a 1¼ inch orifice.  There are copper ridges on each end of the nozzle body.  The ridges help securely cradle the nozzle into the mounting brackets.  The nozzle came off of a Hunneman hand engine and it appears to be an unsigned Hunneman nozzle.

 

008 Alarm Box Door 225

This Victor Talking Machine Co Fire Alarm box door is one of approximately 200 made in the molding workshop of the R. C. Victor plant for retirees. This door is not metal but some composite fibre material. *

 

 

009 Alarm Box 625

This alarm box has a bell on the peak of the roof, door is signed FIRE ALARM TELEGRAPH STATION and MUNICIPAL FIRE & POLICE TELEGRAPH COMPANY BOSTON, MASS and has tag number 9123 with matching code wheel.  Trap lock and mechanism are signed MUNICIPAL FIRE & POLICE TELEGRAPH COMPANY.  The Municipal Company was owned by Moses Crane who was a competitor with Gamewell.  Municipal was only in business for 3 years 1891 thru 1894. * Page 130

 

010 Lantern 4100

There are four shield-shaped bevel-glass acid etched panels on this 17" tall engine lantern.  It has two blue panels that both read UNION 2.  One red panel with a Latin inscription that reads LITERIS ANTIQVIS NOVIS INSTITVIS DECORA, CIVICC REGIMINE DONATA A.D. 1846.  Inside the circular border of the inscription reads CANTABRIGIA and in engraving also reads CONDITA A.D. 1830.  A small piece of edging that holds the red glass panel is missing.  The 4th glass panel is clear and cracked.  On it is a shield with 13 Stars & Stripes.  Above the stars and below the stripes are oak leaves & acorns.  Some of the nickel-plate has worn off.  The threaded base is 4” in diameter.  This lantern probably saw service on a Cambridge, MA and/or Charlestown, MA Steam Engine.

 

011 Helmet 500

This black leather Cairns High Eagle helmet has a brass inner tag that reads Cairns & Bro New York Ventilated Hat.  It has a black front with two red cut-outs and white leather letters.  The top cut-out reads PROTECTION and the bottom cut-out reads T B. which stands for Thomas Baker of Dover, NJ.  The center of the front has a 3 inch tall white leather sewn on number 1 with crossed hook and ladder.  There is no hanging ring or evidence there ever was one.  The liner is in good condition.  This helmet has been re-painted.

 

012 SwitchBoard PASS

This Gamewell 3-Circuit switch board has 2 galvanometers.  The base of it's oak case measures 20" by 24".  It has an access door which measures 22¼" by 9¼".  The door has a 5" by 18" window.  It has a 2 by 7/8 inch brass manufacturers tag that reads GAMEWELL FIRE ALARM TELEGRAPH CO. NEW YORK.  The two corners closest to the door hinges are nicely dovetailed.  This case is original but has been refinished on the outside some time ago. * Page 185

013 Helmet 1700

This black leather Cairns Ventilated high eagle helmet has a black front with 2¼" tall white cut-outs that reads 212 above white painted numbers that read 1441.  The back brim of this New York City helmet has a Bronx Bend.  It is signed CAIRNS on the eagle, inside on the brass tag and on the hanging ring.  It has a felt inner liner and ear flaps.

014     Helmet 400

This black leather Olson high eagle helmet has a black front with 3 red cut-outs which all have white leather letters.  The top cut-out reads MIDDLETOWN, the center T W P and the bottom FIRE CO.  There is a white leather sewn-on number 1 that is 2½ tall between the center and bottom cut-outs.  This helmet is identified as an Olson by it's crown panel and brim designs.  It has a corduroy liner.  Pieces of the original hanging ring remain.  It has a replacement hanging ring which appears to have been replaced quite some time ago.

 

015 Firemark 800

The ledger book of the United Firemen's Insurance Company shows the following data for the policy number 9964 on this firemark.  Issued August 1, 1877 to David J. Davis.  $1000 at $2.00 per hundred for a premium of $20.  Covered a three story brick dwelling on the northeast side of East Cumberland Street No. 816, Philadelphia, PA.  On 7/26/1893 the address number was changed to 2349 East Cumberland Street.  Policy was cancelled September 29, 1911.  This original cast iron firemark is the smallest mark of this company and measures 10 7/8” by 8 3/8”.  It has raised U F lettering and an old model steam fire engine in high relief.  The wheels have 8 spokes.  Bevel edge.  The original paint has expected paint loss and mark is mounted on wood oval that has minor damage to lower edge. *

 

016 Alarm Box 375

This alarm box has a star in the peak of the roof.  The door reads FIRE ALARM TELEGRAPH STATION and STAR ELECTRIC COMPANY BINGHAMTON, N.Y.  There is a Smith keyguard.  The key has a star shaped brass tag,  The key tag, door tag and code wheel all match, showing the number 57.  The door on the inner box reads PULL THE HOOK DOWN ONCE AND LET GO.  The sending mechanism appears complete. * Page 136

 

017 Trumpet 825

This 19" tall silver-plated trophy trumpet reads N.E. LEAGUE MUSTER, CHELSEA, AUG. 22, 1912.  1ST PRIZE TROPHY WON BY ENGINE NONANTUM NEWTON V.F.A. J.R. CONDRIN, FOREMAN.  RECORD STREAM 250 FT 7½ IN.  It has a combination floral and geometric motif. 2" below the inscription there is a fireman's scramble with a High Eagle, Helmet, Ladder, Hook, Hose and a Nozzle.  It has a cord and tassels that are red and blue and appear to be original.  One of the tassels is in poor condition and the other fair.

 

018 Firemark 300

Baltimore Equitable Society firemark issued about 1845.  Cast iron Rectangular 10⅜” x 9⅝”.  Heavy rolled border with raised clasped hands that are gold on black background.  Date of organization, 1794, in gold numerals.  Roped cuff on hands. Keyhole shape hanger hole. *

 

019 Lithograph 1050

L.H. Bradford Lithograph of Hunneman Hand Engine in frame measuring 27½" x 35½".  The handtub was sold to St Louis, Missouri in 1855.  Four years later it was sold to Belleville, Illinois.  It's serial number is 547.  Print reads HUNNEMAN & CO BUILDERS across the bottom.  The discharge side of the Hand tub depicts a scantily clothed woman reclining on a feinting couch.  The center of the facade on the sideboard depicts some sort of battle scene.  The buckets showing have cherubim.  The top of the support structure has a lantern with an eagle on top.  Hand tub appears to be standing in front of storefronts.  Print damaged at 1/3 horizontal position.

 

020 Gong 2250

This house gong has a 10 inch gong.  G. M. Stevens & Co. Boston Pat May 21, 1872 is stenciled on the mechanism.  The  glass is missing.  The case measures 25½” tall by 14¼” wide.  The bottom-most right-side piece of molding on the case and two parts of the glass frame molding are missing.  With key. * Page 218

 

021     Lamp Finial  2650

This 39" tall Red Glass Alarm Box Pedestal Finial Lamp measures 47" when assembled with it's mounting bracket.  The four lower glass panels measure 13½" tall and 12½" wide at the top and 8½" wide at the bottom.  They all read OPENING THE DOOR DOES NOT GIVE THE ALARM across the top and THE HOOK INSIDE MUST BE PULLED across the bottom.  One panel is broken in two parts.  The upper glass panels are red with no engraving.  The center 15" x 3" panels all read FIRE ALARM.  One panel has horizontal crack.  The metal lamp body is in exceptionally good condition.

 

022 Torches 550

Pair matching brass torches mounted on round wood display bases.  The burners thread into the reservoir bases and have a brass caps that thread over the burners.  The caps are on short chains.  The torches stand 12½" tall on the wooden bases. This is the style of torch that would have been mounted on horse-drawn and very early motorized vehicles. *

 

023 Alarm Box 650

This very rare R. B. Long Handcuff Alarm Box door was made to reduce the number of false alarms in an area.  The handcuff portion of this box is missing but would have caught the wrist of the person pulling the alarm, forcing them to wait for a fire or police officer with a key to release them.  This door comes with a copy of the original Long patents.  Included with this door is an empty Gamewell alarm box for display purposes. *

024 Firemark 300

This lead firemark is from the Philadelphia Contributorship for the Insurance of Houses from Loss by Fire, Philadelphia, PA and was issued circa 1800.  This mark is mounted on a custom wood board and shows it's former museum inventory number.  This four clasped hands type of mark would usually have been issued on a shield shaped wooden backing with the policy number on the board.  Reference pages 27-28 of the Footprints of Assurance book. *

 

025 Bell Ringer 500

This #3 bell tower alarm activating mechanism made by Gamewell is on an iron base with grooved feet so it can be anchored to the floor.  It's overall measurements are 38½" tall x 33½" wide at the bed x 24½" deep.  The mechanical levers extend 7½” beyond the end of the bed. It has a 16" long crank with a 9½" long metal handle.  The two electrical coils are missing.  Includes one 12 foot length of chain.  Additional shipping arrangements must be made prior to the auction for other than local pickup. *

 

026 Chain PASS

This 12 foot Length of chain is for bell ringer & whistle blowers. *

 

027 Helmet 400

This black high eagle helmet has a design pattern of Oak leaves, Acorns and a serpentine Branch that encircles the top of the brim.  This pattern identifies the helmet as a Dentzeau Brothers helmet.  They manufactured helmets in New York City at 210 Grand St from 1894 to 1904, at 161 Grand from 1905 to 1906 and at 896 8th Avenue from 1906 to 1907.  The front has three white cut-outs.  The top is a 5-pointed Star, the centre has 5/8" tall black leather letters that read BLACK STUMP and the bottom is a 3" tall number 1.  The Black Stump Company was located in a rural area of Queens now known as Fresh Meadows.  This helmet is complete with liner and hanging ring, but has been re-painted.

028     Helmet    500

This black leather Cairns Ventilated high eagle helmet has a black front with 4 red cut-outs.  All have white leather letters.  From top to bottom they read MANCHESTER, VETERAN, FIREMENS and ASSOCIATION.  Inside there are 2 partial rectangular labels that appear to be identical.  They read 635 ELM ST CO LAKE.......TER, N.H. which is probably the original supplier.  Elm Street and Lake Avenue do intersect in Manchester NH.  The liner is in good condition and the eagle is signed CAIRNS & BRO.

 

029 Transmitter 775

This Gamewell oak case transmitter is 32" tall by 19" wide.  It has a 3" wide by 1⅛" tall brass tag that reads THE GAMEWELL FIRE ALARM TELEGRAPH CO. NEW YORK.  The sending mechanism is signed EXCELSIOR.  It can be adjusted from 1 to 4 rotations.  The 23" tall by 16" wide door has a 19½" tall by 11½" wide beveled glass window.  Inside the case, the back has pins for 49 code wheels, and each side has pins for 7 more code wheels.  This transmitter comes with 6 code wheels, numbers 32, 314, 315, 316, 321 and 361.  The outside of the case has been stained a color resembling mahogany.  The inside color in the original natural oak.  One piece of molding is missing at the top of the case.

 

30 Folk Art Sign PASS

This large wooden sign reads JEFFERS SINGLE PUMP across the top and PAWTUCKET RHODE ISLAND 1868 across the bottom. The 3-dimensional depiction of a steam engine has moving wheels and copper clad boiler.  The front wheel is 10½" and the rear is 12".  The overall frame measures 42½" wide by 36" tall.  There is evidence of hinges on the lower portion of each side of the frame. This sign was purportedly used in display at one of the early National Expositions.

31 Helmet 625

This one of a kind black John Olson ventilated helmet has a 1¾" diameter battery powered light on the front brim.  It is being sold with an original patent (1559451) that was granted to Edward H. Parker of New Britian, Conn on October 27, 1925 by the United States Patent Office.  There is an ON-OFF switch on the bottom side of the front brim.  A wire goes behind the front to the top inside of the helmet where the battery was stored.  The black front has a 3" tall white cut-out Number 2 under which is a small red cut-out with white leather letters that read N B F D.  It has a felt liner and felt ear flaps.

 

032 Police Box 650

The door on this Gamewell box reads POLICE TELEGRAPH and THE GAMEWELL CO. NEW YORK.  Two embossed circles surround the upper key hole.  Between the outer and inner circles it reads CITIZENS KEY.  It has a brass tag #25.  Inside is a candlestick phone with selector switch marked F Wagon, S Wagon, Ambulance, Telephone & Reports 1 2 3.   This box measures 20” by 13”. * Page 210, 211

 

033 Firemark 225

This rare tin Sun London firemark is Bulau #553 as shown in the Footprints of Assurance book.  This is the first type mark used by this company upon admission to America just before 1890.  It is mounted in a frame. It measures 3¾ by 4⅞”. *

 

034 Lantern 325

This brass Presentation Lantern has push-button latches to open it for filling & cleaning.  7" diameter bail handle probably makes this a Chief's lantern. The clear globe is engraved with the name C.B. WILLSON with floral motif above and below. *

035     Advertisement  900

Amoskeag Manufacturing Broadside in deep edge frame that measures 36½" x 30½".  Ten images depicting Steam Engines and Hose Reels.  Print reads AMOSKEAG MANUFACTURING COMPANY across the bottom and E.A. STRAW, AGENT, MANCHESTER, NH and WM. AMORY, TREAS, 60 STATE STREET, BOSTON, MASS.  Print has been in this frame for a long time and is stained from boards on back of frame.

 

036 Lithograph 850

Brightly colored Lithograph of an Amoskeag Manufacturing Co Steam Engine in frame measuring 27½" x 22".  This fully equipped Steam Engine shows BFD 10 on the side lantern and BROOKLYN 10 on the lantern atop pressure dome.  Print reads BUILT BY THE AMOSKEAG MANUFACTURING COMPANY across the bottom and E.A. STRAW, AGENT, MANCHESTER, NH and WM. AMORY, TREAS, 60 STATE STREET, BOSTON, MASS.  Also across the bottom is CHAS CROSBY & CO LITH, 48 WATER ST, BOSTON.  This print has also been in this frame for a long time and is stained from the backing boards.

 

037 Alarm Box 330

This Gamewell Sector 4 Alarm Box has a solid instructional door that reads FOR FIRE BREAK GLASS OPEN DOOR PULL HOOK DOWN AND LET GO.  It has tag #15, a Cole key guard and a T-handle trap lock key.  The lettering and the Gamewell logo are high-lit in white.  The front of the round inner sending mechanism reads PULL LEVER WAY DOWN LET GO.  When pulled, you can hear mechanism click thru 3 rotations. *97

 

038 Repeater 600

This Gamewell 5-circuit repeater is on a white marble base that is 28" wide by 16" deep.  This marble has a beveled edge.  It has a 2¼" by 1" brass tag that reads THE GAMEWELL CO. NEWTON, MASS.  The tag also bears a Gamewell straight fist logo.  The mechanism appears to be complete.  It does not have a cabinet or glass cover.  It is bolted to wooden blocks to make it easier to move.

039 Gong 1200

This wooden case gong is often mistaken for the Gamewell Excelsior. This cabinet measures 17½” tall by 9¼ inch wide, which is slightly taller than a Gamewell Excelsior.  The patent for this gong is credited to both Moses Crane and Frederick Cole. The brass manufacturers tag reads Municipal Fire & Police Tel Co, Newton Highlands, Mass.  The mechanism reads Municipal Fire & Police Tel Co and Pat. May 26, 1891 Others Pending. The screw holding the 6 inch bell to the mechanism has been replaced.  The wood case is dark and appears to be walnut. Municipal Fire & Police Tel Co was only in business a few years before becoming U.S. Fire & Police Tel Co. * Page 218

 

040 Firemark 200

This zinc Home Mutual firemark has two clasped hands and remnants of original maroon paint.  It is mounted on wooden board.  We believe the Bulau number is 161 which dates this to 1871 and came from building on Tenth Street, St Louis, MO. *

 

041 Certificate 250

1862 Charlestown MA Firefighters Membership Certificate in Firematic Motif Frame.  Certificate signed by Chief Engineer George E Rogers.  J.H. Bufford Litho Co, Boston, MA produced certificate.  Frame originally made to hang long-ways with Engines top & bottom, Firefighters Scramble on each side all connected by lengths of hose & nozzle.  Overall measurement of frame 23" x 19".

042     Bucket   480

This black leather fire bucket has yellow-gold painted letters that read T. HAM, No.2, 1807.  The rims of the bucket have worn red paint on them.  All the paint  appears to be original. The leather handle has been replaced. *

 

043 Alarm Box 300

This rare Gamewell combination fire and police alarm box is 23½ inch tall by 11½” wide.  The door on the upper section reads FOR FIRE, BREAK GLASS, TURN HANDLE, MORGAN AND WRIGHT.  Originally in Chicago, Morgan and Wright built bicycle tires.  When they moved their plant to Detroit in 1906 they started making tires for the booming automobile industry.  The back side of the upper door has tag #215 which matches the code wheel in the fire sending mechanism.  The lower police section door reads EMERGENCY ALARM SYSTEM, THE GAMEWELL CO., NEW YORK.  When open you can see that the code wheel in the police sending mechanism is #23.  The lower door has 2 key holes, one to activate the police sending mechanism and the other to access the telephone (which is missing).  This box has NOT been restored.  There are two keys, one for the upper door and another for one lower door, the one that simply calls the police is missing. * Page 112

045 Alarm Box 290

Used by electrically operated Railroads and Subways, this Gamewell alarm box was used to disconnect the power to the third rail.  This box is usually called a Latey box after it's designer Henry Latey.  The door reads GAMEWELL AUXILIARY FIRE ALARM and THE GAMEWELL FIRE ALARM TELEGRAPH CO NEW YORK and it has a lock.  Some doors read LATEY EMERGENCY and do not have a lock.  There are several variations.  This one has a brass tag #141 but the code wheel is number 2.  The inner box door has two brass plaques.  The top plaque reads PRESS BUTTON FOR FIRE and the bottom has 17 Patent Numbers that date from 1888 to 1900.  There is a wind-up handle between the two plaques.  The mechanism appears to be in working order.  This box is about the size of an Excelsior but is not as ornate. *

 

046 Hydrant 510

This brass coffee pot hydrant was carried on apparatus.  A street plate would have been removed, this threaded into it and when the screw handle engaged the valve under the street it would allow the water to flow thru the single discharge.  It measures 27½” from base to the top of the handle and is stamped E27 around the collar. *

 

047 Helmet 210

This black leather Cairns New Yorker has a black front with white cut-out leather letters that read MDA and the date 1954 stamped below MDA.  1954 is the year that the International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF) took the Muscular Dystrophy Association as their main charity.  In 1952 at the South Boston Fire Engine Co 1, Charles Crowley began fundraising to help a fellow firefighter who's sons had just been diagnosed with MD. Within the next two years he took the fundraising effort nationwide when the IAFF designated the MDA as it's main charity.  This helmet has a liner & hanging ring.  It has seen little if any service.

 

048 Firemark 200

This tin Williamsburgh City New York firemark is gold on a black background.  This is the only type mark know to have been used by The Williamsburgh City Fire Insurance Company of Brooklyn, NY.  Marks were issued from 1853.  This mark is Bulau #227 as shown in the

Footprints of Assurance book.  It measures 6⅝" x 3 3/16" and has appropriate minor damage near mounting holes at each corner. *

 

049     Trumpet  630

This silver plated trumpet is 23” tall.  The diameter of the bell is 8¾”.  This trumpet has a floral motif on the bell and has not been polished.  It has a gold tone tassel and cord which appear to be original.

 

050 Lantern 450

Signed THE SEAGRAVE CO. COLUMBUS, OHIO this brass plated Deitz Fire King lantern has a red globe.  It bears the patent date Aug 27, 07 and it is in fair condition.

 

051 Globe 60

This green globe fits Dietz Fire King and Fire Queen lanterns.

 

052 Parade Belt 180

This black belt with white trim has a maroon cut-out with white leather letters that read 1 TORRENT 1.  The keeper is also black with white trim and maroon cut-out.  It has white leather letters that read NASHUA.  The inner belt that holds the keepers is there but broken.  The inner belt that attaches to the buckle is in good condition.  Included with this belt is a dance card for the Nashua Firemen's Relief Association dated March 8, 1889.

 

053 Alarm Box 240

This cast iron box was in service at the Ford Motor Company plant starting around 1915.  It is a combination box with Gamewell alarm sending mechanism and Western Electric telephone parts.  It has a brass tag #315 and reads FIRE ALARM PULL LEVER WAY DOWN and PATROL SIGNAL at the bottom.  The ear piece for the phone is the type used on candlestick phones.  The 1910 model of this box had an external door that was embossed Ford Motor Co. *

 

054 Stick Phone 450

This desk mount scissor-arm stick phone is marked UTICA FIRE ALARM TEL CO UTICA, NY 22593-L on the phone and has an advertising label that reads FIRST NATIONAL BANK & TRUST COMPANY OF NEW HAVEN PHONE 73000 and has a pencil holder. *

 

55 Firemark 200

This cast iron oblong slightly raised clasped hands firemark reads GERMANTOWN 1843 MUTUAL FIRE and is Bulau #153 as shown in the Footprints of Assurance book.  It
easures11½” by 8½”.

056 Trumpet 200

This copper trumpet is 29” tall. The diameter of the bell is 8½”.  This trumpet has three raised brass bands with repousse floral ornamentation that is repeated on the edge of the bell.  There is also a silver colored band with star shaped floral patterns.  It has a seam than runs the length of the trumpet that appears to be silver soldered.  The mouthpiece is missing.  The trumpet has very minor dents & scratches appropriate with its age.

This black belt with white trim has a red cut-out with white leather letters that read CHICOPEE FALLS.  The keeper is also black with white trim.  It has a red cut-out with white leather letters that read V.F.A.  The belt and the back of the keeper each have a metal tag that reads CAIRNS & BROS 146 GRAND ST N.Y. Both inner belts are intact.

 

058 Register 320

This unusual combination register-tapper bell saw service in Chicago IL.  This custom combo was built by the Chicago Fire Department.  Both the register and the 4 inch umbrella tapper are nickel plated.  The tapper has an internal striker.  The unit is mounted on a 5¼ inch deep by 7” long black base.  The bottom of the base is signed S2. *

 

059     Alarm Box    250

This door on this empty alarm box reads AUXILIARY FIRE ALARM STATION and CAL ELECTRICAL WORKS S.F.  This company was an early west coast distributor for Gamewell.  Most of the California Electrical Works equipment was destroyed in the San Francisco earthquake and subsequent fire of 1906. *

 

060 Portsmouth NH Lot 300

This lot includes a hand engraved badge that reads W. J. SAMPSON H & L 1 PORTSMOUTH. N.H. The center of the badge depicts a ladder wagon.  The badge is highly embellished.  The pin is intact.  Also in the lot is a Programme for Portsmouth Fire Department Muster, Concert & Dance 4-day event in 1883.  Both items are mounted on mat board and in a frame.

This white belt with black trim has a red cut-out with white leather letters that read 1 HOSEMAN 1.  At one time it was folded on each side of the red cut-cut.  The white is missing at the folds and there is a small amount of damage to the black trim at the top of one of the folds. The keeper is also white with black trim.  It has a red cut-out with white leather letters that read DAMARISCOTTA ME.  Both inner belts are intact.

64 Alarm Box 150
This cast iron box has a slanted fist in the peak of the roof.  The top of the door reads NORTHERN ELECTRIC GAMEWELL and the bottom reads Northern Electric Company Limited.  The door is keyless and has a brass T handle in the middle.  The upper right corner of the door has been repaired.  The door in the inner box reads PULL HOOK DOWN ONCE AND LET GO.  The sending mechanism is signed NORTHERN ELECTRIC COMPANY LIMITED and bears the number 3181.  The code wheel is number 334.  The round inner glass is missing.  Theouter door does not have a tag as is often the case with Northern Electric. *

65 Lantern 160

This Deitz tubular lantern is signed DEITZ FIRE-DEP'T TUBULAR.  The lift off cage is signed PATENTED JAN-1-89 and it has several other patent dates the last of which is JAN 27, 91.  The reservoir is shorter than a Fire King and the red globe is Deitz Fitzall.  There looks to have been a label affixed at one time but is now gone.

068     Alarm Box   450

This Gamewell Sector 2 alarm box door reads FIRE ALARM TELEGRAPH STATION and THE GAMEWELL FIRE ALARM TELEGRAPH CO NEW YORK and brass tag 2-153.  The peak of the roof has a slanted fist logo and the box has a wooden base.  It has a Sector 2 sending mechanism and non-matching code wheel.   There is no lock. *

 

069 Ambrotype 190

This 1/9 plate ambrotype depicts a firefighter with a bib front shirt.  The bib has a number 1 in the middle and the word TAUNTON across the bottom.  This ambrotype is in a wooden case that is covered with brown paper made to look like leather.  The case has geometric design.  The case is in good condition.  Some of the brown has worn off on the side with the brass latch. *

 

070 Lantern 290

This flip-top Chief's lantern is marked C T HAMM MFG CO #39 on the bottom of the removable reservoir.  It is nickel-plated with a clear globe and in very good condition.  The bail handle is 8½" in diameter. *

This black belt with white trim has a red cut-out with white leather letters that read 2 ENTERPRISE 2.  About half of the white paint on 2 ENTERPRISE 2 is worn off.  The keeper is also black with white trim.  It has a red cut-out with white leather letters that read CAMPELLO.  Both inner belts are intact.

 

072 Coin 150

This 1½ inch Medallion commemorates Enterprise #2 Championships.  One side reads NEW ENGLAND LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIP Won by Enterprise 2 at Taunton, Mass August 24, 1904.  226'5".  The other side reads CITY CHAMPIONSHIP Won by Enterprise 2 at Highland Park, Avon Oct 1903 202' 5 1/3".  Medallion appears to be sterling sandwiched over brass or bronze and is hand stamp-engraved.

 

073 Draw Bar 260

This 8'4" long handtub drawbar is red.  The red paint is faded and has traces of black and gold color pin striping.  The front hand grip is 18" wide with 9" drops for the ropes.  The male end that hooks to the handtub is tapered.  It tapers from 4½" wide to 2" wide. The pin hole that attaches it to the handtub is vertical.

74 Alarm Bell 350

This electro-mechanical alarm bell has a 10 inch brass bell which is embossed PROPERTY OF DEP'T OF EDUCATION N.Y. CITY.  The mechanism is in an oak case.  It appears to be an Edwards No. 140 made for indoor use.  Tied into the city fire alarm system, it activates automatically when an alarm is pulled, but it can be manually operated by pulling out the button on the left hand side.  It has two wire terminals above the button.
075 Grenade 290

This 11 inch tall half gallon amber glass grenade is barrel shaped with horizontal hoops.  It is embossed HAZELTON HIGH PRESSURE CHEMICAL FIRE KEG.  It has a metal ring around the neck but the bail handle is missing.  No contents.

 

076 Ambrotype 90

This 1/6 plate tintype depicts a firefighter wearing a bib front shirt, a white parade belt and a pill box hat.  It is in a thermoplastic case that has the same firefighting motif on each side.  The images on the case include a fireman carrying a small child in his right arm and a trumpet in his left hand, firemen pumping a hand engine, a burning building, a watch tower, a fireman holding a nozzle playing a stream on a fire and a fireman's scramble in the middle. The case has 5 very tiny chips.  Of the photographic cases produced with firefighting motifs, this is the hardest to find.

This 1/6 plate ruby ambrotype depicts a firefighter wearing a very elaborate dress uniform which includes a bow-tie and white parade belt.  There is a backward Number 2 where the lapels meet.  The firefighter is holding a trumpet.  This ruby ambro is in a thermoplastic case that has an image of a lady falconer on both sides.  Overall the case is in very good condition with the exception of a very small chip on the lower right hand corner.  The case measures 3¾ inch by 3¼ inch.

This black belt with white trim is wider than most parade belts.  It has a maroon cut-out with white leather letters that read TREASURER.  The maroon cut-out is flanked by two decorative cut-outs .  It has the inner belt that holds the keeper but there is no keeper.  A 1 inch and a 2 inch section of the white trim is missing.

 

082 Badge Lot 100

3 Contoocook NH badges.  A silver tone badge that reads "SYPHON 1 CONTOOCOOK, N.H.".  The number 1 is applied.  The badge has a "C" catch and a kick-stand type pin.  Another silver tone badge reads "2nd ASST ENGINEER F.D. CONTOOCOOK, N.H.".  This badge also has a "C" catch and kick-stand type pin.  A gold-tone badge reads "CAPTAIN CONTOOCOOK H&L" with fireman's scramble in the middle and a safety pin style pin.

 

083 Helmet 250

This black Cairns leather New Yorker has a black front with 2 red cut-outs.  The upper cut-out has white painted letters that read SALISBURY and the lower has white painted letters that read FIRE DEPT.  It has a sewn-on white leather number 3 in the middle.  It is complete with a liner and ear flaps although one of the ear flaps is damaged.  It also has a hanging ring.

 

084 Firemark PASS

This tin Concordia Milwaukee firemark is thought to be one of only six in existence.  It is black on silver background and measures 6¾” by 3¼”. *

This black leather Cairns New Yorker style has a FDNY number 1 front which has been married to the helmet.  The inner tag reads Cairns & Brothers Inc, P series, Clifton, NJ.  It is in good condition and has Bourke eye protection, liner and hanging ring.

086     Tintype 130

This 1/6 plate tintype depicts a firefighter in dress uniform.  He is wearing a high front helmet with a backward Number 1 on it and he is holding a trumpet.  The tintype has a small surface scratch which does not detract from the image.  This tintype is in a wood case that is covered with brown paper made to look like leather.  A very small amount of the brown paper has worn off.  The case measures 3⅝ inch by 3⅛ inch with a floral pattern and good latch.

Brayley.  This book is complete but cover is almost un-stitched and has been tape-repaired under front cover. Cover corners are rounded.

This 1/9 plate tintype depicts a firefighter with a large white star on his shirt.  He is wearing a high front helmet with the initials OWT on the front.  This tintype is in a wood case that is covered with brown paper made to look like leather.  The spine shows very early signs of fatigue.  The case measures 2½ inch by 2⅞ inch and has a good latch.

 

090 Take-up Reel 75

This Gamewell Pendulum style take up reel is 7½” tall.  It is signed "The Gamewell F.A. Tel. Co. New York".  The uprights are copper colored.  Some of the color on the bottom front is coming off.  It takes 1 inch wide paper and appears to be complete.

This plated badge is stamped Whitehouse Hose 3 Rochester, NH FD.  There is black paint inside the stamping.  The is also remnants of hammer engraving on the edges. The badge is hallmarked John C. This white parade belt has a black cut-out with 7/8 inch tall white leather letters that read EXCELSIOR.  A hand engine named Excelsior, built by Turboss, was in service in Holliston MA, lending credibility to consignors claim that this belt is from Holliston.  The belt has a 1 inch long brass tag that is signed CAIRNS & BROS 146 GRAND ST N.Y.  It has both inner belts, but the keeper is missing.

 

096 Badge 100

This plated badge is stamped ELA Hose 5 Rochester NH FD.  There is black paint inside the stamping.  There is also remnants of hammer engraving on the edges.  The badge is hallmarked on the back side John C. Robbins 142 Harrison Ave., Boston, Mass and scratch engraved Victor C Canney, 16 Washington, Box 917 and dated 3/1/25.  The pin is intact and in good working order.  Some of the plating has worn off.

 

097 Ambrotype 140

This 1/9 plate ambrotype depicts a firefighter who is wearing a high front helmet with a Number 3 on it.  He is also wearing a dark red shirt and a parade belt with a Number 3 on it.  This ambrotype is in a thermoplastic case with a geometric pattern on both sides which measures 3 inch by 2⅝ inch.

 

098 Galvanometer 50

Gamewell New York Fire Alarm Telegraph Galvanometer in 4 3/4 inch round wooden housing with mounting bolts.   The 2 inch dial has a 0 - 90 & 90 - 0 scale with some ripple to face of dial.  This meter was used to state the direction of travel of the current in a municipal fire alarm circuit which is a series circuit. This reading would help to locate a circuit problem.

This double reed wooden weighted watchman's alarm rattle is 8” long and 6½” tall.  It is in working order and has a dark patina. *

This maroon belt with white trim has a black cut-out with white leather letters that read NORWOOD.  The keeper is also maroon with white trim.  It has a black shield shaped cut-out with a white leather number 1.  Both the word Norwood and the number 1 have been repainted.  Both inner belts are intact.

This Gamewell Excelsior alarm box has an instructional door that reads For Fire Break Glass Open Door Pull Hook Down and Let Go.  It has a Cole Keyguard & key, brass tag #24 and a straight fist logo.  The code wheel in the non-interfering inner box does not match the tag on the outer door.  The glass is missing.

 

106 Register PASS

This ADT ink writer register uses 1/2 inch tape.  It has a black metal base that is 10½” long by 5” wide.  The body is brass and bears a tag that reads Type No. 276 Rec-6-Ohms.  It has 4 external coils and it comes with a 6½ inch long one way ratchet that is signed A.D.T.

 

107 Parade Belt 100

This black belt with white trim has a white cut-out with red leather letters that read "3 STOKER 3".  The cut-out has a double fork design at each end.  The inner belt is intact, but the belt buckle is not longer attached to the belt.  The keeper is missing.

 

108 Front Lot 60

Four Cairns gold colored hand painted 6 inch fronts.  All have black, red & white 3-D lettering.  One is marked Assistant Chief Schenk, another Assistant Chief Walter both with three trumpet scramble at the top.  The third reads Honorary Chief L.F.D. W.R. Courneen and the fourth reads Honorary Deputy Chief Pete Arevelo.  The Arevelo front has been mounted on a helmet at some point. All in very good condition.

This cobalt blue glass grenade is embossed HAYWARD HAND GRENADE FIRE EXTINGUISHER NEW YORK around the shoulder.  It has 18 vertical pleats and a diamond shaped panel.  It is 6” tall, the stopper is intact and is complete with contents.

Cairns leather ice bucket in the shape of an antique fire bucket. It has a metal liner and a wooden cover. It has a depiction of the Papeete Hand Engine, and it is in very good condition and has original Claim Your Buckets tag.

Lot includes 7 items.  Silver tone badge reads WHITE ANGEL SALEM V.F.A. with firemens scramble in center.  Pin is intact with "C" catch.  A Red White & Blue ribbon reads WHITE ANGEL and MEMBER on the frame with logo medallion.  The ribbon itself reads 36th ANNUAL MUSTER N.E.S. VETERANS FIREMEN'S LEAGUE July 19th, 1926 Salem, Mass.  Gold tone fringe intact at bottom.  The 2nd ribbon is blue and is from same muster but reads TERCENTENARY COMMITTEE on the frame with same logo medallion.  Gold tone fringe intact at bottom and around edges.  The 3rd ribbon reads WHITE ANGEL on sillver tone frame over American Flag bunting with fringe tassels.  It is purple and reads SALEM V.F.A. BROCKTON FAIR MUSTER OCT. 3, 1913.  Silver tone fringe intact at bottom.  A ribbon top, missing pin and broken on back reads WHITE ANGEL MEMBER above logo medallion.  A celluloid pinback button reads N.E.S.VETERAN FIREMEN'S LEAGUE MUSTER SALEM, MASS. AUG 13, 1921 around the same fireman image as used on the ribbons earlier.  Simple black & white memorial style ribbon pinback reads VETERAN FIREMEN'S ASSN. on one tail and SALEM, MASS on the other.  The pin center depicts a Button hand engine.

This pair of Sun Insurance London Firemarks is a study in genuine and reproduction.  The lower right is Bulau #534 and is the genuine mark issued about 1800.  The upper left is the reproduction and Bulau #530 as reference in the Footprints of Assurance book. *

This black leather high eagle helmet has a white front with 2 red cut-outs both of which have white leather letters.  The top cut-out reads JUNIOR and the bottom FIRE CO.  In the middle there is a black 2¾" cut-out Number 2.  On the top of the back brim there is a 2" wide by ⅞" tall manufacturers logo that is too faded to read.  This helmet has a liner which is in poor condition.

The brass front holder on this black leather Cairns New Yorker is signed BOSTON FIRE DEPT.  It has a black front with white cut-out number 16.  The bottom of the back brim is signed DONOVAN in green paint.  It has 6 white reflective tape triangles in between the combs, two of which are covered by American Flag decals.  This helmet has see service.  It has Bourke flip down eye protection, hanging ring, a liner and ear flaps.

 

118 Match Holder 150

This E & L Insurance Co Chicago brass Match Holder dates to the Columbia Exposition aka Chicago Worlds Fair 1893.  E & L gave away these match holders as a promotional item. It would have held a brass handled tool and liquid for starting fires. It is 2 3/4” tall and the diameter of the rim is 3¼ inch.  The bottom has the E & L shield shaped logo with crossed trumpets and high eagle helmet.

This sterling silver Badge reads City of Beverly Joint Standing Committee on Fire Dept. Mass. 1907.  Pin is intact, hallmark reads S.P. Co. Sterling.

This flip-top Peter Gray Chief's Lantern has a screw-out reservoir and is nickel-plated.  The bail handle is 7½" diameter.  The lantern is in overall very good condition. *

 

123 Alarm Box Combination 100

At first glance the Philadelphia style quick-action door on this Gamewell alarm box looks like a standard 1951 style quick-action door but it is not.  It's glass would have be broken to activate the alarm.  The quick-action door reads TO OPEN BREAK GLASS THEN PULL DOWN HANDLE.  The glass would hold the door up.  Once the glass is broken, the door can be pulled down to expose the handle or one can reach through the window and pull down the handle.  This box is screwed to a pedestal top, the bottom of which is round and has 3 decorative rings.  The lower ring has set screw holes so it can be attached to the pedestal pipe.  It's inside diameter is 5 3/4"  The back side of the pedestal top has 1 3/4" tall letters that read FIRE.  The box is empty and has tag #6623.  It takes a common inverted Christmas tree key.  Together the box and the top are 24" tall. * Page 8

The tin litho Climbing Fireman part of this Marx toy is 8" tall.  He is wearing a red helmet, very dark-blue turn out coat with yellow belt and collar, red pants and black boots.  The wind-up key is under the fireman's left arm and the stop/start lever is on  his back side.  Approximately 98% of the original paint on the fireman is intact.  The back of the fireman is signed LOUIS MARX & CO, N.Y. U.S.A. PATENTS PEND'G.   The ladder base measures 5¼" by 3⅝"  The two-part yellow ladder is 22¼" when assembled.  A 1" piece at the top of the ladder is badly rusted and slightly bent.  The overall height of the toy varies depending on which one of the 3 adjustment holes on the ladder base is used.  The climbing fireman is in good working order. *

Twaalfskill is Dutch for 12 Striped Bass and is the name of a brook in Kingston, NY.  The Twaalfskill volunteer company was located in the Wilber section of Kingston many years ago.  Also included in this lot is a dress uniform hat which has a badge reading TWAALFSKILL K.F.D. *

 

126 Alarm Box 100

This cast iron Gamewell Alarm Box has a slanted fist in the peak of the roof. It has a non-instructional door with a Cole key guard and brass tag #34.  The door reads FIRE ALARM TELEGRAPH STATION above the tag and THE GAMEWELL FIRE ALARM TELEGRAPH CO. NEW YORK below the tag.  The inner box has a Gardiner 1887 design non-interfering type sending mechanism with a matching code wheel.. This box saw service in Watervliet NY on the corner of 7th Ave and 19th Street. *

This Gamewell automatic electric light time switch turns the lights on in the Station House when the fire alarm circuit is activated.  It can be set to keep the lights on for a desired period of time, after which the lights are automatically turned back off.  This switch is designed to save money on the electric bill.  The mechanism is in an 7¼ inch diameter by 4 inch tall brass canister.  The face of the canister reads AUTOMATIC LIGHT SWITCH THE GAMEWELL CO NEW YORK.  There is a hole in the middle of the face for a wind-up key.  The mechanism is mounted on a 16 inch tall by 9 inch wide black slate. 128 Bunker Hill Lot 170

This lot has two items.  The first is a pressed brass Charlestown Fire Department badge.  Across the top the letters C.F.D. are in a banner, the middle is a depiction of the Bunker Hill Memorial and the bottom shows badge number 245 in an oval.  The pin is intact.  This badge is believed to be circa 1910.  The other item is a BOSTON V.F.A. blue ribbon with a pinback button  that depicts the Bunker Hill Monument and reads 127TH ANNIVERSARY BATTLE OF BUNKER HILL, CHARLESTOWN, JUNE 17TH '02.  The pin is intact and the original manufacturers tag is still attached.

 

129 Lantern Holder 110

This 17 inch tall lantern holder (hanging bracket) is painted red over nickel plating.  It has a single hook on the top and it has spring loaded clamp arms on the bottom.  Deitz Fire King Lanterns fit very well.

 

130 Parade Belt 180

This black belt with white trim has a red cut-out with white leather letters that read "FOREMAN".  The keeper is also black with white trim and has a red cut-out with white leather letter 5.  Both inner belts are intact. *

This Gamewell Nonpareil 4-circuit register appears complete and the bevel glass is in good condition.  The manufacturers tag reads THE GAMEWELL CO X92 followed by three Oct 26, 1909 Patent numbers.

 

132 Take-up Reel 50

This Gamewell Pendulum style take up reel is 7½” tall.  It is signed "The Gamewell F.A. Tel. Co. New York".  The uprights are brass.  It takes 2 inch wide paper and appears to be complete.

134 Leather Shield 140

This white leather shield has three red cut-outs and white leather letters. The top reads CHARLESTOWN, the middle VVFA and the bottom J H R.  JHR is the firefighters initials. This shield could have been used as a sleeve badge or perhaps a parade belt keeper as evidenced by the leather strap on the back side.

Original copy of Aug 20, 1908 Lowell MA Muster Book.  The back cover is missing. Included in lot is a ribbon from this muster.  Ribbon reads Mazeppa No. 4 on the pin frame front. There are crossed American flags over a frame that reads A.H.E.A., this portion of the ribbon is

disconnected from the top.  The body of the ribbon reads ACUSHNET HAND ENGINE ASSOCIATION, New Bedford Mass.  N.E.S.V.F.L. MUSTER LOWELL, MASS August 20, 1908.  There in gold tone fringe on the bottom.

 

136     Controller Box   50

The door on this black Gamewell model 3 controller box  reads, “Gamewell Flash Light Controller, Newton, Mass”. When the speed nut latching system is released, the door flips up rather than sideways. It has an arched roof and it measures 11½” tall x 9” wide x 5” deep. Inside there are 2 coils and 2 fuses, and it appears to be intact.

 

137 Badge 95

This silver colored badge reads Hose 1 Defiance B.F.D. It has an engraving of helmet at the top and hand-hammered trim at edges.  The pin is intact.  A previous owner believes this is from Bristol, CT but our research points to Buffalo, NY. There is scratch engraving on the back WRU and 1912-1913.

This 1900 design Gamewell Excelsior alarm box has a slanted fist at the top of the non-instructional door.  It is unusual because it has never been drilled for a key guard.  It has tag #26 and a matching code wheel.  The inner box has a 1901 non-interfering sending mechanism.  The box comes with a lock, which has been removed because there is no key and it could not be opened for auction preview. *96

 

141 Toy 60

This Doepke Engine pumper toy is the earlier version of the pumper produced from 1952 to 1956.  Notice smooth hose compartment floor.  Decals read ROSSMOYNE and CHARLES WM DOEPKE MFG CO MODEL TOYS PATENT PENDING on sides of truck, and on doors AUTHORIZED BY AMERICAN-LA FRANCE ALFCO on the driver door and a Star on the passenger.  All decals are intact and most original parts, with the exception of the ladder.  Overall dimensions are 19" long by 6" wide by 6" tall.  Some minor paint loss and rust on hose compartment deck. *

 

142 Alarm Bell 100

This combination alarm bell & Gamewell round telegraph sending mechanism is mounted on an 8 inch wide by 18” tall wooden board.  This type of alarm bell was used in Railroads & Subways.  The sending mechanism has a brass tag that reads THE GAMEWELL FIRE ALARM TELEGRAPH CO. NEW YORK.  The face of the sending unit reads FOR FIRE BREAK GLASS PRESS BUTTON.  The exposed glass is 5” in diameter and the sending unit is 5¾” in diameter. *

 

143 Lantern 150

This brass chiefs lantern has a clear globe and a large bail handle (7¼ inch diameter).  The bottom can be removed so that the wick can be lit and regulated without removing the globe.  The top flips over making it easy to take out the globe for cleaning.  The bottom is signed Patented No. 25 (18)90.

144     Ballot Box   50

Both compartments of this ballot box have covers with fancy hinges. Includes marbles, the black are square so you don't have to draw the marble out to "see" the color.  The wood appears to be maple with nice tight grain and good patina.  The ballot end has a pin which holds the lid open until manually pushed in.  The voting hole has a small cup below it and is mounted on a spring loaded swinging divider so that you can "reset" the marbles for the next vote.  Overall length is 15”.

 

145 Trumpet 60

This 18 inch tall pewter trumpet has a 9 inch diameter bell.  It appears to have been made in the 1960s.  It is in very good condition.

Two General Taylor ribbons, one reads EVERETT V.F.A. BROCKTON FAIR MUSTER, Brockton, Mass. October 7, 1932 with nice scramble medallion but no fringe.  The other reads EVERETT V.F.A. LEAGUE MUSTER, BOSTON, MASS Aug 23, 1917.  This ribbon has gold tone fringe but no center medallion.

This unmarked nickel-plated Foot Gong Bell would have been mounted under the floor boards of the driver or passenger side of a fire truck.  The foot plunger is removable.  This bell is in good working order. *

This red leather Dentzeau Brothers high eagle helmet has a black front with 3 red cut-outs which each have white leather letters.  The top cut-out reads FIRE, the center PATROL and the bottom 37.  Between the top and center cut-outs, there is a white cut-out in the shape of a 5-
pointed star.  This helmet is identified as an Dentzeau Brothers by it's crown panel and brim designs.  See Lot 27 for further Dentzeau Bros information.  This helmet has a liner.  Very few cities had fire patrols.

 

153     Book   90

Titled OUR FIREMEN: THE OFFICIAL HISTORY OF THE BROOKLYN FIRE DEPARTMENT FROM THE FIRST VOLUNTEER TO THE LATEST APPOINTEE.  It was compiled from department records and published in 1892.  This book is hard to find because it was never re-published.  It has 473 pages of text, illustrations and photos.  It also includes an 1892 roster of all 645 members of the Brooklyn Fire Department from Commissioner John Ennis on down.  There are also about 90 un-numbered pages of advertising.  It is in very good condition for it's age.  A ¾" long piece of fabric is missing at the top of the front cover and a 1½" long piece of fabric is missing at the bottom of the front cover.

The reservoir on this lantern has an 1½ inch long oval manufacturers tag that reads STEAM GAUGE & LANTERN CO, STANDARD TUBULAR, SYRACUSE, N.Y. CHICAGO ILL, LAMPS & LANTERNS.  This company was purchased by Dietz in 1898.  This lantern looks like a Deitz tubular Fire Queen tho taller.  The flip up cage has the same style locking clips as a Fire Queen.  The upper spring mechanism that holds the globe is missing.  A Deitz Fitzall globe is included. *

 

156 Poster 110

This Flaming Fury Movie Poster is 22” tall by 28” wide, probably made for lobby display.  This movie claims to be based on arson bureau files and was directed by George Blair.  This picture company existed from 1934 to 1959.  In very good condition with minor edge tears not in image.

 

157 Rochester NH Lot PASS

This lot includes two cabinet photos and an application.  One photo depicts a Captain in double-breasted dress jacket & cap.  The other a fire fighter, also in double-breasted dress jacket & cap.  The third item is an APPLICATION FOR MEMBERSHIP to the COCHECO Engine Company #1.  The application is pencil-signed by several people including the person recommending.

 

158 Helmet 330

This black leather Cairns Ventilated high eagle helmet has red paint on the top.  It has a red front with 2 black cut-outs both of which have white leather letters.  The top cut-out reads LADDER and the bottom K F D.  In the middle is a 2¼" tall white leather sewn-on number 2.  This helmet is signed CAIRNS on the eagle and inside brass tag.  The back brim has a Bronx Bend and hanging ring.  There is no liner.

 

159 Alarm Box PASS

This cast iron Gamewell alarm box saw service in Watervliet NY.  It has a straight fist in the peak of the roof.  It does not have the word Gamewell or the words REG. U.S. PAT. OFF. in the peak of the roof which dates this box from 1896 to 1906.  Since the sending mechanism is an 1896 Ideal Successive design, this box probably dates close to 1896 than 1906. The early instructional outer door reads FOR FIRE BREAK THE GLASS OPEN THE DOOR PULL HOOK DOWN ONCE AND LET GO. On later instructional doors the word THE was left out and the HOOK became HANDLE. The Cole keyguard was added later as it covers the word PULL.  It has brass tag #36 and matching code wheel.  The sending mechanism appears to be in working order. * Page 89

Original Pedestal gas-lamp aluminum cap & rim collar.  The decorative rim measures 17½" in diameter.  The cap stands 9½" tall with a 6½" opening on the bottom.  The rim collar sets on the clear glass of a pedestal lamp and would fasten the milk glass top to the lamp.  The cap would be atop the milk glass portion. *

This 7½" tall plastic Texaco Fire Horn is signed A SPEC-TOY PRODUCT MADE IN USA.  It has a yellow high front helmet with a blow hole at the top.  The body of the horn is red.  The top of the body has a male face under which reads FIRE CHIEF.  The mddle of the body has a crank which moves a hammer that strikes a 1½" diameter bell.  The bottom of the horn is green and is 2 7/8" in diameter. *

This spring wound single stroke low voltage (4 Ohms resistance) Edwards alarm bell has a 12 inch diameter brass bell.  It appears to be an Edwards No. 133 made for use in exposed places.  It is signed EDWARDS & C PATENT NEW YORK.  It also has a decal that reads PETTES RANDELL CO. 150 NASSAU ST NEW YORK, WATCHMEN'S CLOCK & TELEPHONE SYSTEM.  It is mounted on an oak board that is 21” tall and 11¼” wide.  The mechanism is in a weatherproof cast iron housing that is painted red.  There are 2 wire terminals at the top of the housing. * Page 119

There is a 1922 full glass quick-action door on this Gamewell Alarm box.  The bottom of the door is signed THE GAMEWELL CO. NEW YORK.  It has brass tag #559 and there is a matching code wheel in the porcelain inner box.  It has a Peerless sending mechanism which appears to be in working order. * Page 93

This Gamewell 115V/60Cycle Vitalarm Heat Detector screws into a light socket.  When heat is detected the alarm sounds.  It has been recently tested and found to be in working order.  Original box is in good to fair condition. *

This includes a badge that reads FRANKLIN PIERCE VETERAN FIREMAN ASSO. PORTSMOUTH, N.H. There is a high front helmet, nozzle & trumpet at the top of the badge.  The sides of the badge have hydrant discharges.  Lot also includes is a photograph of the Franklin Pierce handtub and a 1906 Franklin Pierce Association ribbon.

This nicely framed and matted William Jeffers & Co advertising broadside measures 17¼ x 22¾”.  It is titled FIRE ENGINE MANUFACTORY and is dated Jan 1, 1859. It depicts two handtubs and a LIST OF PRIZES won by various Jeffers built hand engines.

 

177 Barnicoat Lot 50

This lot includes three items.  Wm. Barnicoat was Chief Engineer of the Boston Fire Department in the 1850s. The first is a pinback button that reads BARNICOAT FIRE ASSOCIATION BOSTON and roman numerals XI and IV on each side of a depiction of a gentleman.  The top of the button has an Owl  holding items in it's claws.  The next item is a medallion that reads BARNICOAT FIRE ASSN with a depiction of an Owl on a branch.  The last item is a ticket #164 to a "Promenade Concert complementary to the Barnicoat Fire Association of Boston at City Hall Tuesday eve'g Sept 4, 1894."  There is a depiction of a P.V.F.A. firefighter in a bib-front shirt holding a trumpet above the date Nov 19, 1891 (Providence, RI).  This ticket entitled a Gentlemen and Lady to Lunch, Dinner, Island & Return, as well as the concert.

Four Boston Almanacs from years 1852/3/4/5.  The 1852 volume reviews the application of the Telegraph to Fire Alarm System that was adopted in March 1851.  It outlines the system designer, constructor, wiring sites, etc., all under Chief Engineer Wm. Barnicoat.  1853 volume, page 33, has section regarding fire department.  1855 volume, starting at page 33, has list of alarm boxes locations.  Also a list of engines and foremen and station locations.  These are true almanacs with all the sun rise/set, moon phase, tide charts, etc.  Each has a map of Boston, and many many references and remarks about theatres, residences, banks, town departments and offices.  Two of the books are in very good condition, while the earliest has come apart at the binding and the 55 edition is quite worn. *

This Gamewell alarm box has a 1923 transitional solid quick action door.  The instructions on the quick action door read TO OPEN PULL HANDLE THEN PULL DOWN LEVER.  It has tag #6533.  Below it's tag, the door reads FIRE ALARM STATION - THE GAMEWELL CO. NEWTON, MASS.  The inner enamel box door reads PULL LEVER DOWN ONCE LET GO.  It has a Peerless sending mechanism and a matching code wheel.  The mechanism appears to be in working order. *

 

182 Torch 145

This 23 1/2 inch long wooden ceremonial torch appears to have been hand turned.  The orange material that represents the flame has some damage.  A lot of the gold colored paint has worn off the handle indicating it has some age. *

 

183 Axe 60

This 34½" long Fire Axe has seen service.  The middle of the handle is natural colored wood with two 5" long pin stripe designs on each side.  Both ends are red with a black stripe that borders the natural colored middle.  Most of the paint has worn off the steel head.  A small chip of wood is missing at both the business end and the butt end of the handle.

Cover depicts hand engine in foreground and steam engine in background and heroic rescue of small child in progress.  Book is complete and framed and double-matted.  Frame is 12½ wide by 15½ tall. *

Two street lamps each with alarm box, one battery operated and the other operates on a 12V train transformer sometimes advertised with Lionel accessories.  Both alarm boxes ring when you twist the knobs.  Street signs say State and Main Streets.  The alarm boxes have a bell in the roof peak and read "For Fire turn handle, the Gong Bell Mfg Co, East Hampton, Conn" and have door tag number 666. * Page 204+B207

This silver colored badge is from Perth NJ.  It reads Perth FD and has nice hand-hammered border and engraved details surrounding a fireman's scramble.  The pin is intact.

 

191 Extinguisher 85

This Pony size SECURITY Soda Acid Extinguisher has a 1921 patent date on the brass label.  Label also has discharge and refill instructions.  It is in good overall condition and it has brass riveted seam. *

 

192 Alarm Box 45

The door on this empty Gamewell alarm box is very unusual.  St Louis had their early Gamewell boxes retrofitted with this style door.  The door has a 5 inch long handle, a break glass panel that is over a counter-sunk turn knob.  The knob is not a key or a trap lock key but it functions as a key.  To the right of the knob is a separate key hole for Fire Department personnel access.  There is a thumb-screw on the back side of the door to hold the glass in place.  No door tag. *

194 Alarm Box 130

This tear-drop shaped Gamewell alarm box reads FIRE ALARM on the top and THE GAMEWELL AUX FIRE ALARM CO NEW YORK on the bottom.  The key guard bears the patent number 824,411 and reads BREAK GLASS, PULL HOOK DOWN.  The box is 8" tall and 6¾" wide.  Inside the box there is a round circuit board.  There is a code wheel with 6 teeth on the back side of the circuit board. This box was made to be used inside a building.

 

195     Deitz Lot 50

Deitz Working Torch has 6½" long thin green canister with brass label that is embossed Deitz Torch.  The torch is mounted on a wooden pole and measures 45" overall.  Red Deitz Volunteer Fire Extinguisher with 9" canister not including the brass pump handle.  It is complete with mounting bracket. *

 

196 Alarm Bell 25

This 6 inch diameter alarm bell is mounted on dark wooden board and has tag that reads Manufactured by F.C. Hatch Co Boston, Mass Pat. Applied for Serial no. 1107.  The striker is internal and in good working order. The box that protects the operating mechanism has dovetailed corners. *

 

197 Grenade 70

This amber Hayward grenade has 4 diamond shape recessed panels. One reads S.F. HAYWARD, 407 BROADWAY, N.Y., another reads PATENTED AUG 8 1871 and the third reads HAYWARD'S HAND FIRE GRENADE.  The last panel is blank. The bottom is embossed with the number 3.  It is empty and the top rim has been repaired. *

 

198 Pedal Car bell 50

This hood ornament is for a fire truck pedal car.  The plated bell is mounted in a yoke allowing it to swing back and forth when pulled.  The bell has a cast iron high front helmet finial.  This ornament is well made and is in the best condition we have seen in 25 years. *

 

199 Front Lot 25

Seven helmet fronts including 4 unused 6½ inch tall Cairns.  One Mt Vernon Captain 490, a Farmington Firefighter Fire Dept 4, a J. Wengstorm T&C F.D. 35 and a Fireman's Fund with rescue image.  There are two older 6 inch RFD NJ 1 that have seen duty.  One unknown maker 6¼ inch R1 front.

 

200 Print 25

This framed print is titled "Burning of St Paul's Cathedral Pittsburgh" It appeared in Gleason's Pictorial Drawing Room Companion on June 14, 1851. This depiction of Pittsburgh was the first to appear in a national illustrated newspaper.  This print is on newsprint and you can see the reverse side lettering upon close examination. The depiction shows three hand engines and one steam engine battling the blaze.  The frame measures 16” by 14 with the image being 10” by 8.

 

201 Alarm Box Doors 45

Two non-instructional Gamewell Alarm Box doors, both read FIRE ALARM TELEGRAPH STATION on the top and THE GAMEWELL FIRE ALARM TELEGRAPH CO. NEW YORK at the bottom.  The first door has a white flip-up key guard that reads LIFT.  This is not a Gamewell key guard.  The City of Milwaukee replaced the Cole key guards with these flip-ups.  This door has Tag number 384.  The second door has part of a Cole key guard with the locking mechanism. *

 

202 Alarm Box Doors 25

Four Alarm Box doors.  Two have early quick action bulls-eye doors.  The type with a clip at the top and no spring at the bottom.  One has the bulls-eye glass, a lock and an aluminum tag number 562.  The other has no glass or door tag.  Both have brass hinges.  The 3rd door is a non-instructional door that reads FIRE ALARM TELEGRAPH STATION, THE GAMEWELL CO. NEWTON, MASS.  The 4th door reads FOR FIRE BREAK GLASS OPEN DOOR PULL HANDLE DOWN ONCE LET GO NEW YORK.  It has aluminum hinges.

203     Mixed Lot 25

Spanner is embossed one side Andrew J Morse & Son Boston, Mass and other side 2141.  Painted orange with a 7" opening and a 5" opening and overall length 27".  Underwriters Playpipe has faded red string and no dents and is marked 1972 with National Standard thread. *

206 Chemical Nozzles 75

A 5½ inch long FAIRY and a 7 inch long unsigned nozzle.  Both have horizontal twist shut-offs and removable tips. *

4 items including a Gamewell voltmeter, a 4¼ inch round Fire Warden hanging  pull alarm, an alarm sending mechanism unit from a police box with code wheel number 167, and a Model MRP-D Potter Electrical relay known as a McCullough relay. This type of relay was used in a Central Station.  Point of Interest, Potter bought Utica Fire Alarm Telegraph Company. *

 

208 Extinguisher 30

This 11 inch tall clear glass empty extinguisher bottle is embossed with the word PYROFITE at the lower front edge and is 12 paneled. Above the word is a 4¾ inch tall panel which originally had a paper label.  There is a cork stopper with metal hanger which extends 1 inch above the rim of the bottle.  The glass has many bubbles indicating age but there are no chips or cracks.

 

209 Boston Lot 25

Lot includes three items. The first is a dot-matrix process reproduction photo of Boston Engine 4 and three other pieces of apparatus.  It is nicely framed and double-matted.  The frame is 19" wide by 15½ tall.  Next item is a framed photo-copy of Tremont Engine Company No. 7 Roxbury, MA 1864.  The last item is a double-sides image of the Bullfinch Street Firehouse photo and on the reverse a 1964 Mack/Gerstenlager Rescue 1 truck that saw service from 1964 to 1977 in Boston.

This cone shaped galvanized fire bucket is 15” deep and the diameter is 14”.  It has a bail handle and remnants of original red paint.  You can just see where it once said "For Fire". *

 

219 Toy 10

The hull of this 11½ inch long red wooden boat reads FIRE BOAT WATER PUMP.  The smoke stack reads CHIEF at the top, FIRE BOAT at the bottom and the middle has a depiction of a fire helmet and an axe.  There is a ½ inch water hole in the deck.  If you fill it with water and push the pump stick up & down, a stream of water shoots out the deck gun past the bow.  The hull is cracked.  The pump is in working order. *

Lot includes 10½" long letter opener with figural Indian Chief handle.  The blade  reads THE GENERAL FIRE TRUCK CORPORATION, THE GENERAL HOSE COMPANY, ST LOUIS, MISSOURI.  Four police/fire type whistles, a nickel-plated one that reads CITY POLICE OR FIRE WHISTLE, a brass one that reads B & R CITY POLICE & FIRE WHISTLE, two unsigned whistles, one of which is cracked.  Also in lot is a hat badge that reads FIRE PREVENTION ALARM OPERATOR SHAKER HTS, O (Ohio).

224     Alarm Box  25

This unusual cast iron box came with 8 other alarm pieces from an upstate New York collection.  Larger than today's street boxes, it measures 18" tall by 12" wide by 8" deep.  The door has 2 side by side 2½" diameter holes.  The back side of door has a slotted holder behind each hole.  These holders appear to be able to hold a 3" square bit of glass.  The top back of the roof has an outlet with 3/4" pipe thread.  The back side of the box has 5 mounting holes and the bottom of the box has several inlet holes.  It is not signed and we have not been able to identify this box.  It is possible that it is not an alarm box, although our upstate NY source claims it is.
